When the sun’s out and the days are long, there’s no better way to spend a summer weekend than escaping to one of the many lakes close to Edmonton. The best part about these lakes is that they are just a short drive from the city. From lively beach towns to peaceful hidden gems, there’s a lake for every type of outdoor lover.

Here’s our guide to the best lakes close to Edmonton for swimming, boating, and weekend escapes.

Jump Ahead

  • Wabamun Lake
  • Pigeon Lake
  • Sylvan Lake
  • Lake Isle
  • Long Lake
  • Skeleton Lake

Wabamun Lake

Driving Distance from Edmonton: About 45 minutes to 1 hour west

Wabamun Lake is one of the most versatile lakes close to Edmonton. With its clear, warm water and sandy shoreline, it’s a go-to for everyone. The lake is anchored by Wabamun Lake Provincial Park, which includes a large public beach, boat launch, picnic areas, and campgrounds with modern washrooms and power hookups.

The beach and park can get crowded on summer weekends, so consider arriving early or visiting on weekdays for a more peaceful experience. If you fall in love with the lake lifestyle, you’ll find a range of rustic cabins to upscale, year-round homes.

Driving Distance from Edmonton: About 1.5 hours southwest

Pigeon Lake features several public access points, including Pigeon Lake Provincial Park, which offers a sandy beach, day-use areas, and a campground. The lake is well-stocked for fishing, and its calm waters are ideal for kayaking or pontoon cruising.

One of its biggest draws is the Village at Pigeon Lake, a small resort-style community. It’s one of Alberta’s few lake areas that offers both outdoor fun and small luxuries in one place. If you’re thinking long-term, this is a lake where community and comfort go hand in hand.

Sylvan Lake

Driving Distance from Edmonton: Around 1 hour and 45 minutes south

Sylvan Lake is the most vibrant and urban-feeling destination on this list. It’s home to a long sandy beach and a bustling lakefront promenade. Popular with both tourists and Albertans, it offers everything from jet ski rentals and banana boat rides to live concerts and family-friendly attractions.

If you visit in July or August, be ready for big crowds and a lively vibe. It’s also one of the best places in Alberta for short-term rental investment properties. For buyers, Sylvan Lake offers modern builds, luxury condos, and charming cottages.

Lake Isle

Driving Distance from Edmonton: Just over 1 hour west

Lake Isle is a quiet, lesser-developed lake west of Edmonton. With its calm waters and typically low boat traffic, it’s ideal for all water activities. There are no major resorts or towns on its shores, which is part of the appeal. The lake is at its best in late summer and early fall, when wildlife is active and the shoreline bursts with colour.

Small communities like Baybridge, Gainford, and Fry’s Beach line parts of the shore, and most properties are modest cabins or off-grid getaways. It’s a great place for birdwatching, campfires, and reading by the water.

Long Lake (near Boyle)

Driving Distance from Edmonton: About 2 hours north

Tucked in the forest north of Boyle, Long Lake Provincial Park is a peaceful spot with tons of amenities. The lake itself is narrow and calm, while the public beach draws families in summer. You’ll find canoe rentals, boat launches, and well-kept campgrounds surrounded by pine and poplar trees.

Peak season runs from late June through August, but September offers gorgeous views and fewer campers. The area around the lake is known for its reasonably priced cabins and undeveloped land.

Skeleton Lake

Driving Distance from Edmonton: Approx. 2.5 hours northeast

Skeleton Lake is one of Alberta’s lesser-known lakes. You won’t find loud marinas or busy boardwalks here, but instead, you’ll enjoy its peaceful atmosphere. The lake is excellent and stays swimmable well into August. The south side of the lake near Mewatha Beach is particularly family-friendly, while the north side remains more rustic and quiet.

The nearby village of Boyle offers basic services, and many of the cabins around the lake have been in families for generations. Still, there are hidden gems and fixer-uppers on the market for those willing to invest in a true retreat.
