Should we spend money on landscaping if we are thinking of selling in the next year or two?

Question of the Week:

“Should we spend money on landscaping if we are thinking of selling in the next year or two?”

That’s a difficult question to answer on a ‘general’ basis. But, suffice it to say that ‘curb appeal’ is a very important component to the saleability of a house. Remember, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

I think it would be worth spending a little to make sure your property is up to the neighbourhood standards…but don’t go overboard. Like everything else in real estate….although you may think that the multiple thousands you spent on your landscaping is beautiful and valuable….the potential buyer may have a completely different idea and see no value in it, and therefore you won’t receive a return on your landscaping investment.

Keep it simple, as good or slightly better than the neighbours, and you’ll be pleased with the results if/when you decide to sell.
