Winter is a season of comfort, but it also brings unique challenges to home safety. From heating risks to icy walkways, taking proactive steps can prevent common winter hazards. Here’s how to safeguard your home and family during the colder months.

Prevent Fire Hazards

Winter fires are caused mainly by heating systems and fireplaces. Keep space heaters at least three feet away from flammable materials and do not leave them unattended.

Manage Electrical Safety

Use power strips that have surge protectors to keep your devices safe and avoid overloading your outlets by connecting too many devices at once. Make sure to inspect holiday lights and cords for damage, and replace any frayed or worn components to keep everything safe and functioning well.

Protect Against Carbon Monoxide

Often overlooked, carbon monoxide is a silent danger during winter as homes are sealed tightly to retain heat. Detectors should be installed near bedrooms and guaranteed that they are functioning properly. Always ventilate appliances like gas stoves, fireplaces, and water heaters.

Avoid Slip-and-Fall Injuries

Snow and ice create hazards on walkways and they make walking dangerous in winter. Your driveway and walkways should be regularly shoveled and salt or sand should be applied to reduce slippery surfaces.

During long and dark evenings, consider replacing your outdoor light bulbs so pathways are well-lit and easy to navigate.

Prevent Frozen Pipes

Frozen pipes can burst and cause expensive water damage. Insulate exposed pipes and do this, especially in unheated areas like basements and garages. Allow faucets to drip slightly during extreme temperatures and keep the water flowing to avoid freezing.

Prepare for Emergencies

Winter storms can cause power outages and various disruptions. It’s important to have emergency supplies ready, including flashlights, extra blankets, and batteries. A backup heat source, such as a generator or wood stove, can be a lifesaver during extended outages.

Fireproof Your Holiday Decor

While decorations can bring festive cheer, they can also present fire risks if not managed properly. Opt for LED candles and fire-retardant materials if possible and if you have a real Christmas tree, make sure to water it daily to keep it from drying out and becoming a fire hazard.
