Spend this holiday season in one of Canada’s most festive cities, places that truly go all out for Christmas. From sparkling string lights and cozy Christmas markets to towering Christmas trees, these destinations transform into postcard-worthy scenes that look straight out of a classic Hallmark Christmas movie. Here are the top five most festive cities in Canada.

Montréal, Québec

During the holidays, Montréal’s downtown streets, especially around Sainte-Catherine Street, are beautifully decorated with bright lights, colorful garlands, and festive displays. The city is home to several Christmas markets, including The Great Christmas Market (Marché de Noël de Montréal). Visitors can browse seasonal handcrafted sweets and gifts while enjoying holiday-themed activities.

Montréal also offers a variety of outdoor activities at the Noël dans le Parc, the city’s largest holiday festival, featuring musical performances and hot chocolate. Ice skating rinks are located nearby for visitors looking to enjoy some winter fun.

Almonte, Ontario

Tucked away in Ontario, Almonte is a quaint small town that’s often overlooked for holiday celebrations. Nicknamed the ‘Christmas Capital of Ontario,’ the town has been the filming location for several Hallmark movies. These include Christmas Around the Corner and The Rooftop Christmas Tree. Walking through the village, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped into a movie setting. Colourfully decorated storefront windows, snow-dusted streets, and cozy cafés complete the town’s festive scene. 

The antique stores and boutiques along Mill Street are the perfect place to do some holiday shopping. The street also hosts the annual Winter Festival Light Up the Night, featuring live music and fireworks. The Almonte Christmas Parade is another highlight, with festive floats, music, and free hot chocolate.

Every holiday season, downtown Toronto gets a dazzling makeover, making it one of the most festive cities in Canada. Holiday markets, twinkling lights, and festive seasonal events fill the city, creating an atmosphere that feels full of holiday cheer. The world-famous Distillery Winter Village Christmas market features historic streets adorned with festive decorations and a huge Christmas tree, one of its most iconic photo spots. The market is filled with local artisan shops, seasonal food and drinks, and endless opportunities for photos. 

Around this time of year, Nathan Phillips Square also lights up and welcomes visitors to its outdoor ice skating rink. Other events include Winterfest Toronto, where guests can enjoy colourful lights and Christmas setups, cozy fire pits, and delicious seasonal treats.

Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, is a lovely small city that offers a cozy and festive atmosphere mixed with historic charm and local traditions. The heart of the city is adorned with wreaths, garlands, lights, and cheerful Christmas displays. Charlottetown Harbour is a popular festive spot, often hosting craft markets and decorated with holiday lights. 

Local theatre and music groups such as the Confederation Centre of the Arts host holiday concerts, caroling events, and festive performances, all designed to bring the community together. In addition, the Charlottetown Christmas Festival offers family-friendly activities like a Breakfast with Santa event, holiday performances, and wagon rides.

The Winter Lights Across Canada program features an annual light display along Confederation Boulevard, highlighting landmarks such as Parliament Hill and national museums. Iconic buildings are illuminated with festive seasonal projections. 

The Rideau Canal, the world’s largest naturally frozen skating rink, offers a classic holiday experience, with food vendors and scenic city lights along the route. Nearby, the National Arts Center hosts festive orchestra shows and holiday performances, adding to the magical atmosphere.
