Dreaming about your new home can feel overwhelming, with so many designs and aesthetics to choose from. How do you figure out what truly fits your style? A mood board can be a great way to organize your ideas. To start, save images, text, or designs of homes you like and create a collage on a board. This method can help you decide the mood you’re looking for and direct you in the right direction to achieve your dream home look. It’s a fun way to collect your thoughts while going through the process of designing your home.

We’ve put together a list of things you can consider while making your dream board.

Where’s Your Dream Home?

One of the most crucial factors to consider when planning your dream home is the location. The city or area you choose plays a significant role in shaping your lifestyle. Whether you prefer the energy of an urban environment, the tranquility of rural living, or something in between, the city you select will influence your daily routine, work-life balance, and overall well-being.

Here are a few lifestyle options to consider:

  • City Lifestyle: Living in a major city, such as Toronto, New York, or Vancouver, offers easy access to a wide range of amenities, cultural events, and career opportunities. These urban hubs are ideal for individuals who enjoy fast-paced environments, the convenience of public transport, dining, shopping, and entertainment options right at their doorstep.
  • Suburban Lifestyle: Suburban areas, offer a more relaxed pace of life while still being within reach of urban centers. Suburbs typically provide larger homes, quieter neighborhoods, and excellent schools, making them an attractive option for families.
  • Rural Lifestyle: For those who prefer peace and privacy, rural areas like Prince Edward Island or Montana may be the perfect setting for a dream home. Rural living offers wide-open spaces, fresh air, and a slower pace. While you may be further away from large cities, rural areas often come with lower housing costs, opportunities for outdoor activities, and a deep connection to nature.
  • Remote Lifestyle: If you value complete isolation and independence, remote living, like staying in cottage country over the winter, could be an appealing choice.

Each of these lifestyles has its own pros and cons, and it’s important to think carefully about what aligns best with your career goals, family needs, and personal preferences. Consider how far your home will be from your place of work, whether it offers a sense of community, and if it’s near the amenities that support your lifestyle. These considerations will help you identify the perfect city and environment for your dream home.

What does your dream home look like?

Once you’ve figured out the type of city you want to call home, your mood board can start reflecting that lifestyle. For example, you’re likely to find yourself in a condo or loft in bustling urban areas, as suburban-style homes are less common in these settings. On the other hand, if you opt for a more rural location, you’ll have greater flexibility in your choices, perhaps even a charming cottage nestled in the woods. A beach house may be the ideal fit for those who value scenic views and a suburban atmosphere.

Designing your dream home

To refine the aesthetic for your mood board, it’s essential to first decide on the type of furniture style you’d like to incorporate into your home. When refining your mood board aesthetic, start by narrowing down the furniture style that speaks to you. Depending on your personal taste, you might prefer a vintage, colorful, or modern style. This doesn’t have to be the time to start budgeting—let your creativity flow without limitations for now. Keeping your style consistent across your mood board ensures a cohesive vision when it’s time to furnish your space. Our advice? Begin with one room and gradually move through the rest of your home, planning each space carefully.

With countless design possibilities, the opportunity to personalize each room is endless to infuse your unique style throughout your home.

Creating a color palette for your mood board

Color plays a significant role in setting the mood of your home, and choosing a featured color palette is an essential part of any mood board. Darker tones can make a room feel more intimate and cozy, while drawing attention to the furniture and decor. On the other hand, lighter shades can create a sense of spaciousness and brighten the space. Each color brings its unique appeal, either enhancing or altering the room’s intended style.

It’s also crucial to consider how lighting affects the colors in your home. Natural light, for instance, can alter the appearance of paint colors on your walls. When selecting a specific shade, it’s helpful to test different shades to ensure you get an accurate sense of how the color will look in your space

When it comes to making color choices for your home, Hannah Yeo, a color marketing and development manager at Benjamin Moore, told The Spruce “Consider the time you’re in the space the most. If you don’t get a lot of natural light, opt for light, cool colors as they tend to recede. For rooms with large windows and direct sunlight, consider mid to dark tones to counterbalance.”

Mood boards are a valuable tool when you’re unsure how to design your home. They help clarify your preferences and visually represent how your dream home might look. While a mood board isn’t set in stone it’s an excellent starting point for turning your dream home into a reality.
