St. Catharines City Guide

Nicknamed “The Garden City”, St. Catharines is the largest city in the Niagara Region and the sixth largest urban area in Ontario. It is located south of Toronto across Lake Ontario and near the US-Canada border crossing along the Niagara River.

Manufacturing is the city’s dominant economic driver, with General Motors of Canada acting as the anchor company for the city’s economy. St. Catharines is also one of the main telecommunications backbones between Canada and US and as a result, the city hosts a number of call centres.

Demographics

As of the Canada 2016 Census, there are 133,113 people in the city of St. Catharines. This represents 1.3% growth from the 2011 Census population of 131,400. This is comparatively less than both Ontario’s overall growth rate of 4.6% and Canada’s growth rate of 5.0%. An overwhelming majority of the population in the city is of white ethnicity at 90%. The largest visible minority groups in the city include Chinese, South Asian and Black Canadians.

Retail

There are several major shopping centres in St. Catharines: The Pen Centre, Briarfield Shopping Centre, Fairview Mall, and the Outlet Collection at Niagara.

Sports

There are currently no professional sports teams that call St. Catharines home. Most residents in the city visit Toronto to watch professional sports.

St. Catharines Airbnb Regulations

There are currently no regulations in place for short-term rental platforms like Airbnb in the city of St. Catharines.

St. Catharines Infrastructure

Public Transportation

St. Catharines Transit Commission is the main transit system, operating a fleet of buses which service the entire city. There are currently no plans for any rapid transit system to be implemented in the city. A majority of major routes run from 6:00 a.m. until 11:30 p.m., Monday to Saturday, and 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday. A one-way fare on the St. Catharines Transit system is $3 for adults, youth and seniors. A monthly pass can be purchased for $92 a month for adults, $22.50 a month for youth, and $20 for seniors.

Airports

The St. Catharines/Niagara District Airport is classified as an airport entry for Nav Canada and can handle general aviation aircrafts only. This means that there are no more than 15 passengers per flight and no commercial airlines fly into the St Catharines’ Airport. Residents of St. Catharines will need to visit Toronto Pearson International Airport for their air travelling needs.

Taxi/Uber

The biggest taxi company that operates in St. Catharines is Central Taxi. Because taxis are difficult to hail on the go, it is best to book in advance or visit a train station or hotel where they are usually parked waiting for passengers.

An alternative to hiring a taxi in the Niagara region is Uber. Currently, the only Uber service available in St. Catharines is the low-cost UberX. Uber has quickly become the most popular ride hailing service across Canada for its convenience.

Highways

The Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) is the main highway that brings traffic to and from cities like Hamilton and Toronto. The QEW carries traffic all the way through St. Catharines towards the US-Canada border via Highway 405.

Hospitals

The only hospital in the city is St. Catharines Hospital, which is located just west of the city in Grapeview.
