Windsor City Guide

Known as the “Automotive Capital of Canada, Windsor’s industrial and manufacturing economy is responsible for driving the city’s prosperity. Windsor borders the US city of Detroit, which is located to the south, across the Detroit River, and is the southernmost city in Canada. It has a well-established tourism industry as the city is the gateway to the Windsor-Quebec City Corridor, a 1,150-km route that connects three out of the five largest metropolitan areas in Canada.

According to the 2016 Canadian Census, the population of Windsor is 217,188, and a total of 344,737 people live within the metropolitan area. Retail

There are both large and small shopping malls and plazas in Windsor, including Central Mall, Tecumseh Mall, Devonshire Mall, and Walker Square. Devonshire Mall is by far the largest mall in Windsor with 175 stores.

Sports

There are currently no professional sports teams that call Windsor home. Most residents in the city visit Toronto to watch professional sports.

There are currently no regulations in place for short-term rental platforms like Airbnb in the city of Windsor.

Windsor Infrastructure

Public Transportation

Transit Windsor is the main transit system, operating a fleet of buses which service the entire city. There are currently no plans for any rapid transit system to be implemented in Windsor. A majority of major routes run from 6:00 a.m. until 12:15 a.m, Monday to Saturday, and 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday. A one-way fare on the Windsor Transit system is $3.00 for adults, children and seniors. A monthly pass can be purchased for $95.70 a month for adults, $66.00 a month for youth and $48.40 for Seniors. Transit Windsor also operates a tunnel bus to Detroit seven days a week, which cost $7 per ride.

Airports

Windsor International Airport serves the residents of Windsor with a mixture of scheduled commercial flights and general aviation. The airport is a popular point of entry into Canada for private and business aircrafts. The airspace is exceptionally busy due to its proximity to the Detroit Airport which 37% of local residents opt to use for their international air travel.

More than 250,000 passengers pass through this airport every year with daily service from airlines including Air Canada, Air Transat, Porter, Sunwing and WestJet. Destinations originating from this airport include Toronto, Punta Cana, Samana, Orlando/Melbourne, Cancun, Cayo Coco, Varadero, Montego Bay, and Calgary.

Taxi/Uber

The biggest taxi company that operates in Windsor is Vets Cab Taxi. Because taxis are difficult to hail on the go, it is best to book in advance or visit a train station or hotel where they are usually parked waiting for passengers.

An alternative to taking a taxi in Windsor is Uber. Currently, the only Uber service available is the low-cost UberX. Uber has quickly become the most popular ride hailing service across Canada for its convenience.

Highways

Windsor is the gateway to the Windsor-Quebec City Corridor via the Ontario 401 highway, which connects residents from Windsor and Detroit to eastern Ontario and Quebec. This highway system runs through some of the biggest cities in Ontario and it one of the busiest highways in North America.

Hospitals

There are currently two hospitals in the city of Windsor: Windsor Regional Hospital and Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital. Both hospitals are easily accessible by all residents.
