Oakville City Guide

Located halfway between Toronto and Hamilton, and long Lake Ontario, Oakville is a suburban town in the Halton Region. In 2016, MoneySense rated Oakville as the 5th best place to live in Canada. There are three major shopping centres in Oakville: Oakville Place, Upper Oakville Shopping Centre, and South Oakville Centre. Street retail shops are also available in the downtown area of the city.


There are currently no professional sports teams that call Oakville home. Most residents in the city visit Toronto for professional sports.

Oakville Infrastructure

Public Transportation

Oakville Transit is the main transit system, operating a fleet of buses which service the entire city. There are currently no plans for any rapid transit systems to be implemented in the city. A majority of major routes run from 6:00 a.m. until 11:30 p.m., Monday to Saturday, and 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. A one-way fare on the Oakville Transit system is $3.75 for adults, children and seniors. A monthly pass can be purchased for $125 a month for adults, $80 for youth and $60 for seniors.


Since Oakville is part of the Greater Toronto Area, the city is serviced by two Toronto international airports: Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ).

YYZ is currently the busiest airport in Canada, handling over 45 million passengers annually. Pearson airport is located in Etobicoke, a 30-minute drive from the city core, and is the main air traffic hub for the Greater Golden Horseshoe region. Pearson has over 1,100 daily departures to more than 180 destinations around the world.

YTZ is a small international airport that is located on the Toronto Islands just south of Lakeshore Boulevard. Porter Airlines and Air Canada are the two primary airlines that serve this small airport, which has daily departures to nearby cities in both Canada and the US.


The biggest taxi company that operates in Oakville is United Taxi. Because taxis are difficult to hail on the go, it is best to book in advance or visit a train station or hotel where they are usually parked waiting for passengers.

An alternative to hiring a taxi in Oakville is Uber. Currently, Uber offers an expansive selection of options in Oakville including UberX, UberXL, UberSELECT, POOL, UberBLACK, UberSUV, UberAssist, and UberWAV.


The city is serviced by two main Ontario Highways: Ontario 403 and Ontario 407, which both bring traffic to and from the city of Toronto.


The only hospital in the city of Oakville is the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital which is located just north of the city.
