Burlington City Guide

Located halfway between Toronto and Hamilton, Burlington is a suburban municipality in the Halton Region on Lake Ontario. Along with Milton to the north, Burlington forms the west end of the Greater Toronto Area. From an economic standpoint, the city is located near the geographic centre of the Golden Horseshoe, a densely populated and industrialized zone with over 8 million people. In 2016, MoneySense rated Burlington as the 9th best place to live in Canada.

Demographics

As of the Canada 2016 Census, there are 183,314 people in the city of Burlington. This represents a 4.3% growth from the 2011 Census population of 175,779. This is on par with both Ontario’s overall growth rate of 4.6% and Canada’s growth rate of 5.0%. A majority of the population in the city is of European descendent. The largest visible minority groups in the city include Chinese, South Asian and Arab residents.

Retail

There are three major shopping centres in Burlington: Appleby Village, Burlington Mall, and Mapleview Shopping Centre. Street retail shops are also available in the downtown area of the city.

Sports

There are currently no professional sports team that call Burlington home. Most residents in the city visit Toronto for professional sports.

Burlington Infrastructure

Public Transportation

Burlington Transit is the main transit system, operating a fleet of buses which service the entire city. There are currently no plans for any rapid transit systems to be implemented in the city. A majority of major routes run from 6:00 a.m. until 11:30 p.m., Monday to Saturday, and 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. A one-way fare on the Burlington Transit system is $3.50 for adults, children and seniors. A monthly pass can be purchased for $97 a month for adults, $71 for youth and $60 for seniors.

Airport

Since Burlington is part of the Greater Toronto Area, the city is serviced by two Toronto international airports: Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ).

YYZ is currently the busiest airport in Canada, handling over 45 million passengers annually. Pearson Airport is located in Etobicoke, a 30-minute drive from the city core, and is the main air traffic hub for the Greater Golden Horseshoe region. Pearson has over 1,100 daily departures to more than 180 destinations around the world.

YTZ is a small international airport that is located on the Toronto Islands just south of Lakeshore Boulevard in the City of Toronto. Porter Airlines and Air Canada are the two primary airlines that serve this small airport, which has daily departures to nearby cities in both Canada and the US.

Taxi

The biggest taxi company that operates in Oakville is Burlington Taxi. Because taxis are difficult to hail on the go, it is best to book in advance or visit a train station or hotel where they are usually parked waiting for passengers.

An alternative to hiring a taxi in Burlington is Uber. Currently, Uber offers an expansive selection of options in Burlington including UberX, UberXL, UberSELECT, POOL, UberBLACK, UberSUV, UberAssist, and UberWAV.

Highways

The city is serviced by two main Ontario Highways: Ontario 403 and Ontario 407, which both bring traffic to and from the city of Toronto.

Hospitals

The only hospital in the city of Oakville is the Joseph Brant Hospital which is located on the western edge of the city.
