Moving out after a divorce or separation is more than just packing a few boxes; it’s a big life transition. The process can feel overwhelming and messy, from dividing shared belongings to starting fresh in a new space. To help you stay organized and in control, here are five practical tips to help make the move-out smoother and more manageable.

#1: Create a Clear Plan Before You Move

Before you start packing, make a clear plan of what needs to happen and in what order. This can include finding a new place to live, setting an official move-out date, arranging moving trucks, and updating your address on important documents. Having a clear, orderly checklist will make this difficult process much easier and help you stay on track. And if you’re not in the headspace to pack by yourself, consider asking family and friends to come help. Similarly, if you need to move out in a hurry and have room in your budget, consider hiring professional movers, who often offer packing services as well.

#2: Pack Personal Items First & Start Early

When you start packing, focus on items that are officially yours, like clothes, electronic devices, toiletries, sentimental belongings, and personal documents. This ensures your essentials are safe and accounted for. Packing early in small stages like this lessens the workload for each new day. It also makes the actual move-out day easier, since you know the most important items have already been taken care of.

#3: Divide Shared Items Ahead of Time

Once your personal belongings are packed, the next step is dividing the shared items. This can be tricky, especially during an emotional time, but having a clear plan can make the process go by quickly.

Both partners can write down the items they wish to keep, then review the lists together. You might not be able to get everything you hoped for, but this method helps keep the process organized and documented while reducing conflict. Another method is to take turns choosing big-ticket items, such as furniture, until everything is divided, which is a simple and fair way to ensure both parties have a chance to get what they want. If you can’t decide how to split shared property, consider chatting with your divorce lawyers about it.

#4: Label Everything Clearly

Once you have finished packing both the shared items and your personal belongings, securely tape all the boxes and clearly label them with your name to avoid any confusion. You can also label each box with the room it belongs to and tape a simple inventory list on top, so you know exactly what’s inside. This makes the unpacking process much more orderly and less stressful.

#5: Pick Out New Comfort Items

New, fresh linens are a must after any big breakup. Before your move-out date, consider letting go of shared items like pillows, blankets, and duvets. These items can make it harder to move on, as they serve as a constant reminder of your past. Donating these items or leaving them behind can make it feel like you’re shedding the past and creating space for a fresh start. Once you’ve let go of the shared comfort items, buy new ones for your new space to build an environment that feels truly yours.

#6: Designate an Area For Boxes

Moving out after a divorce can get messy with boxes everywhere, and you don’t want to make an already stressful time even harder. Agree on a designated area to keep your boxes so the space stays organized and tidy.

Starting Fresh

Moving out after a divorce can be challenging, but it’s also the start of a new chapter in your life. While packing, organizing, and leaving behind shared belongings can feel difficult, focusing on the clear plan can make the process easier. Take things one step at a time, and remember that you will get through this difficult transition.
