If you’ve ever imagined living just minutes away from your favourite major league baseball team’s home stadium, where catching a game isn’t a once-in-a-while event but a regular part of your routine, then you’re in the right place. From rent to home prices, we’ve broken down the cost of living in every MLB city so you can see what it really means to call one of these cities your home.

The Most Expensive MLB Cities

It’s no surprise that San Francisco, California, home to the San Francisco Giants, ranks as the most expensive MLB city to live in, both in terms of rent and home prices. If you’re a Giants fan dreaming of living near Oracle Park Stadium, prepare your wallets and plan your budget carefully. With rent averaging more than $3,600 and home prices over $1.4 million, living in San Francisco takes some serious work. Rent is nearly twice the national average, while home prices are about 3 times higher.

Miami, Florida, home to the Marlins, ranks as the second most expensive MLB city for rent prices. With rent topping $3,000, residents pay a shocking 60% more than the national average.

San Diego, California, is next on the list for the priciest rent and home prices. Home to the Padres, San Diego offers median rent prices of $2,858, a staggering 51% more than the national average, while home prices exceed  $1 million, roughly 2.3 times the national average.

Lastly, Los Angeles, California, home to both the Angels and Dodgers, ranks as the third most expensive MLB city in terms of home prices. With a median home price of almost $880,000, living in this city costs twice the national average. If you’re a fan of any of these teams, living in their cities is going to require a significant amount of financial planning.

Top 4 Most Affordable MLB Cities for Rent

The MLB cities with the most affordable rent prices have median prices that are 31% to 36% lower than the national average, making them great choices for dedicated fans

The lowest monthly rent is in  Kansas City, Missouri, home to the Royals, which has a median rent of $1,295, 31% lower than the national average. St. Louis, Missouri, home to the Cardinals, comes next with median rent of $1,250, 34% lower than the national average. Detroit, Michigan, home to the Tigers, follows with rent costing $1,224, 35% below the national average.

And finally, Cleveland, Ohio, home to the Guardians, takes the crown as the most affordable MLB for rent. If you’re a huge fan of the Guardians, you’re in luck, as living here means you get to be close to all the game day fun and traditions without breaking the bank. Cleveland offers median rent prices as low as $1,215, an astonishing 36% lower than the national average.

Top 4 Most Affordable MLB Cities for Home Prices

For fans wanting to stay close to the action, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, and Detroit offer the most affordable home prices among MLB cities. In these cities, home prices are about 32% to 43% lower than the national average. 

The most budget-friendly place to buy a home is in an  Detroit, which has median home prices of $293,900, 32% lower than the national average. Next up is St. Louis, with homes costing $271,000, which is 36% lower than the national average. Following that, we have Pittsburgh, home to the Pirates, with median home prices at $250,700, 42% lower than the national average.

Ending off the list we have Cleveland again with the lowest median home prices at $243,400, a notable 43% lower than the national average, making it the ideal city for fans.

Cleveland & St. Louis: The Sweet Spot of Housing and Rent

Out of all 30 MLB cities, Cleveland and St. Louis ranks in the top four as the most affordable for both rent and home prices. With rent and home prices well below the national average, these cities offer the most budget-friendly options while also giving you the chance to be close to your favorite teams.
