Remote work has become the new norm and as a result, digital nomads are making the most of it. You don’t have to fly across the world to find scenic landscapes, reliable Wi-Fi, and buzzing cities; North America is filled with plenty of ideal spots to explore remote work for a few weeks or months. Here’s our pick for the top destinations for digital nomads in North America based on affordability, reliable internet, attractions, and the tech scene:

Montreal, Quebec

Known for its creative arts scene and European flair, Montreal has a growing tech ecosystem and a lower cost of living compared to other major North American cities. One indication of its affordability is the city’s average rent price, which, according to Rentals.ca’s most recent rent report, is far below other major cities in Canada at $1,712 a month for a 1-bedroom apartment.

The city has a rapid subway system that makes it easy to get from cafe to co-working space in no time, and in the summer months, it’s even possible to bike to most places. Montreal is covered with cozy cafes so even in the winter months you can comfortably work in one while warming up with a coffee.

Portland, Oregon

For digital nomads looking for a slower pace of life surrounded by nature, Portland is the place to go. This vibrant city is booming with cafes that are the perfect work environment for digital nomads. Portland’s moderate climate, with snow an infrequent occurrence, and a wide variety of bars, restaurants, antique stores, and hiking trails add to the city’s attractions.

According to rent.com, in June 2023 the median rent in Portland was $2,383 – making it one of the most affordable large cities on the entire west coast.

Victoria, British Columbia

Finding a city without harsh winters in Canada can be difficult, but Victoria offers much milder winters compared to Toronto, Calgary, and other big cities. Located on a picturesque island, Victoria has a growing tech industry, is home to several coworking spaces, and has a high standard of living.

In comparison to Vancouver, Victoria is far more affordable. The average rent in Victoria was $2,071 in June 2023 according to rentals.ca – nearly $900 cheaper than Vancouver, making this a great option for those wanting to experience west-coast living without breaking the bank.

Austin, Texas

Compared to other tech hubs like San Francisco, New York, or Seattle, Austin boasts a much more affordable cost of living. As the capital of Texas, it’s bustling with activity day and night. One of the city’s main attractions is its eclectic music scene and you can find live music most days of the week.

Best of all, Austin is warm year-round so you can enjoy hiking in nearby parks and trails throughout the year. According to rent.com, the median rent in June 2023 was $2,150.

Edmonton, Alberta

Surrounded by nature on all sides, Edmonton is another great option for digital nomads who love the outdoors. It’s one of the most affordable cities in all of Canada and is growing in popularity thanks to its proximity to national parks, strong economy, and many cultural festivals held throughout the year.

The average rent in Edmonton for a 1-bedroom apartment was $1,196 in July 2023, according to rentals.ca, making this the 5th most affordable city when it comes to rent in Canada.

Jacksonville, Florida

Florida’s largest city is often overshadowed by its southern neighbours, Miami and Tampa, but don’t count this sprawling city out. Jacksonville is warm all year, with close access to miles of beaches, and boasts dozens of parks and trails.

Digital nomads love Jacksonville for its low cost of living, international cuisine, and near-constant sunshine. Out of the 4 cities in Florida analyzed by rent.com, Jacksonville had the lowest median rent in June 2023 at just $1,635.
