Canada may be known for its maple syrup, hockey, and sweeping natural beauty, but it’s also home to a surprising number of world-famous celebrities. From pop icons to comedy legends, many stars who shine brightly on the global stage got their start in small towns, suburbs, and cities across the country. Here’s a province-by-province look at some of Canada’s best-known talent and the places they still call home.

British Columbia

Seth Rogen, Vancouver

Few celebrities are as proud of their Canadian roots as Seth Rogen. Born and raised in Vancouver, the comedian and filmmaker often highlights his love for the city when he’s back home. Whether he’s sharing favorite local spots or bringing that West Coast humor to Hollywood, Rogen continues to embody Vancouver’s quirky, creative spirit.

Pamela Anderson, Ladysmith

Nestled on Vancouver Island, Ladysmith is a postcard-perfect coastal town, and it also happens to be Pamela Anderson’s hometown. The Canadian-American actress, model, and media personality even filmed her show Pamela’s Garden of Eden here, centered around revitalizing her grandmother’s property. With its beachy, laid-back vibe, Ladysmith provided the perfect backdrop for Anderson’s mix of nostalgia and reinvention.

Sandra Oh, Nepean

Before she became Dr. Cristina Yang on Grey’s Anatomy and Eve Polastri on Killing Eve, Sandra Oh grew up in Nepean, a suburb of Ottawa. Her rise from Canadian theater productions to international stardom makes her one of the country’s most celebrated actors.

Justin Bieber, Stratford

Justin Bieber was born in Stratford, Ontario, and rose to global fame as a teenager after bursting onto the music scene. Despite his international success, he has stayed connected to his roots, with recent visits to nearby Cambridge alongside his wife, Hailey, often turning small-town outings into international headlines.

Shawn Mendes, Pickering

Born in Pickering, just east of Toronto, Shawn Mendes went from posting Vine covers to selling out arenas worldwide. In October 2015, he opened for Taylor Swift during her 1989 World Tour at Toronto’s Rogers Centre, a true hometown highlight early in his career.

The Arkells, Hamilton

Not every college band becomes a household name, but Arkells proved to be the exception. Formed at McMaster University, the Hamilton-based rock group has grown into one of Canada’s most successful bands.

  • Average home price in Hamilton: $754,000

Martin Short, Hamilton

Hamilton also produced another legend: Martin Short. Beloved for his roles in Father of the Bride and Only Murders in the Building, Short’s Emmy-, SAG-, and Tony-winning career has made him a comedy icon on both sides of the border.
