After School Activities for Your Kids to Try in the Fall

Whether your kids come home so full of energy they could run a marathon, or so tired like they just finished a marathon, here are 7 activities for kids to do in the fall.

For the Active Kids

Go On a Kid-Led Hike

If you have access to a wooded area or hiking trails, take the family out for a hike and let the kids lead you. Hikes are more fun when you’re allowed to go check out that rock or lead the family down a different trail because the trees look cooler. It’s a great way to both spend time outdoors before you’re snowed in and tire out any hyper kiddos.

DIY a Chalk Race Track

Bust out the sidewalk chalk and design a racetrack on the driveway. Bikes, trikes, and push cars, all are great to use in the cooler months as well as in summer, and a racetrack can bring more novelty and fun than just riding around on the sidewalk.

Check Out Drop-In Activities

Many local rec centers will have drop-in times and activities for kids in the fall. This could range from open swimming at the pool to kids clubs to skating times. Often these drop-ins are free with membership or cost very little.

For the Creative Kids

Make a Nature Bracelet

Loop a strip of packing or duct tape around your kids’ wrists and turn them loose in the backyard, or go on a walk. Every time they find a pretty leaf, a cool stick, or a nice flower they can stick it to their ‘bracelet’ and make a fall-inspired piece of jewelry.

Themed Crafts

With Halloween and Thanksgiving fast approaching, themed crafts are a great way to keep kids entertained for a few hours. From handprint turkeys to jack-o-lantern paper bags, there are hundreds of craft ideas online to choose from.

Fall Scavenger Hunt

Make or find a list online of fall-themed items for a scavenger hunt and turn kids loose in the backyard or at a park. Have them find things like acorns, pine cones, different colors of leaves, etc. If your child(ren) has access to a smartphone camera they can take pictures of their finds, or simply collect the items on the list.

Virtual Fun

There are lots of fall-themed activities online. Navigate through a virtual corn maze, or play an online pumpkin-carving game. There are dozens to choose from, from educational and learning games to mindless but fun entertainment.
