Creating a pet-friendly living space requires thoughtful consideration of both your pet’s needs and the design of your home. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you design a space that accommodates your furry friend while maintaining a stylish and functional environment:

Choose Pet-Friendly Flooring:

Opt for durable and scratch-resistant flooring materials like hardwood, laminate, or tile, but avoid carpets as they can trap odours and are prone to stains. Vinyl and luxury tile flooring are also popular choices among pet owners as they are durable, long-lasting and resistant to moisture, dents and scratches.

Create Designated Pet Areas:

Designate specific areas for your pet’s belongings, such as a cozy bed, feeding station, and toy storage. Incorporate these areas seamlessly into your overall design and make sure to choose areas that are quieter. You can even build around the nook for your pet with storage drawers or pullout dog bowls.

Select Pet-Friendly Furniture:

Choose pet-friendly fabrics that are resistant to stains, fur, and odours. Some of these fabrics include leather and faux leather, velvet, microfiber and canvas. In the case of messy pets, consider furniture with removable and washable covers for easy maintenance and cleaning.

Provide Adequate Storage:

Incorporate storage solutions for pet toys, grooming supplies, and food. Utilize stylish bins or baskets to keep clutter out of sight. Pet storage cabinets can range in price from $85 to $270 depending on the size and the number of pets you have.

Create a Comfortable Resting Space:

Include comfortable beds or blankets in various areas of the house where your pet likes to relax. Ensure these spaces are away from high-traffic areas for your pet’s peace. Other pets like to be close to their owner so consider choosing a spot up against a wall in a corner where you usually sit.

Secure Your Space:

Check for potential hazards and secure them. This includes keeping electrical cords out of reach and securing toxic plants. You can also install gates to restrict access to certain areas or you can buy childproof latches to keep little paws from opening cabinets. Additional safety precautions include keeping medicines and cleaners up high, keeping trash cans covered, and blocking any small spaces that they can get into.

Provide Entertainment and Exercise Opportunities:

Dedicate space for interactive toys and scratching posts, which can range from $20 to $100 depending on the size and material. Ensure your pet has access to windows for natural entertainment and that it is cozy so they can drift off basking in sunlight.
