Townhouses are growing in popularity across Canada, especially in hot markets where the price of singly-family homes continues to rise. According to the Canadian Real Estate Association, sales of this housing type are up 17.4 per cent year over year in June.

Within the Toronto real estate market, townhouses also present a relative bargain; they were priced at an average of $704,449 last month, reveals the Toronto Real Estate Board, compared to an average of $1,386,524 for detached houses.

However, this low-rise option is becoming highly sought among affluent home buyers as well. A report from Sotheby’s International Realty Canada states sales of multi-unit housing priced above $1 million are up a whopping 98 per cent year this year. Sales of Toronto townhouse units priced over $4 million rose 150 per cent.

Stated Sotheby’s CEO Brian Henderson, “Multi-unit residential, whether it’s condos or townhomes, is becoming a choice for move-up buyers or right-sizers because they’re looking to focus on something where it’s a bit more affordable, and wanting to have a good address and still have enough space for their stuff and lifestyle.”

But how do luxury townhouses stack up against their detached counterparts? To find out, Zoocasa round up seven of the most luxurious Toronto townhouse listings, all of which require a few million to spare – and it should come as no surprise that over-the-top amenities and high-end design features set the standard.

Check out the most luxurious townhouses in Toronto in the galleries below:

Tha 1 St. Thomas Street

Listed at: $5,998,000

3 bed, 5 bath, 3,500 – 5,000 sq. ft.

Why we love it: Besides being the most expensive townhouse currently listed for sale in Toronto, this property has all the high-end features one would expect at this price point. The townhouse was designed by famed New York architect Robert Stern and has American Walnut hardwood flooring throughout, motorized blinds and a dramatic two-storey living room. Did we mention it has a gallery to showcase your private art collection?

TH105-32 Davenport Road

Listed at: $1,498,000

3 bed, 3 bath, 1,200 – 1,399 sq. ft.

Why we love it: In the Yorkville area, townhouse units are hard to come by at this price point – but buyers certainly won’t sacrifice luxury either with the ceiling windows and Miele appliances in the kitchen. Shared amenities are definitely the standout in this complex, as owners would have access to a 5,000 square foot terrace, plunge pool, yoga room and even a piano bar.
