Unionville, located just outside Toronto, has a charming, storybook feel, and that’s no coincidence. The very first episode of the iconic Gilmore Girls show was filmed here. Although the story is set in the fictional Connecticut town of Stars Hollow, Canadian fans know there’s a special hometown connection hidden right in Unionville. With its quaint streets, local cafes, photobooths, and small-town charm, Unionville has a unique, cozy energy that is sure to pull you in.

More than two decades after its debut, Gilmore Girls remains a cultural touchstone, a unique TV escape that shaped early-2000s television and redefined the feel-good charm of small-town life. The character’s fast-talking wit, pop culture references, and a strong mother-daughter bond still resonate deeply with audiences today. Luckily, you can capture that same magic with a visit to Unionville, the real-life inspiration behind the show’s beloved town. Here’s how to spend a day exploring it, Gilmore-style.

The next place to visit is Luke’s Diner, one of the most iconic locations in Gilmore Girls. In the show, the diner is more than just a restaurant; it’s where the characters gather for coffee, gossip, and hang out. Although the set has since been converted into a medical spa, the exterior still resembles the original filming location. For a Luke’s Diner replacement, you can grab a bite at Espresso 21, where they serve specialty lattes and brunch-style dishes.

The Unionville gazebo wasn’t actually featured in Gilmore Girls; instead, it served as a strong inspiration for the Stars Hollow town centre gazebo, where many memorable moments took place, from Lorelai and Luke’s engagement and wedding to town gatherings after meetings and heartfelt talks between Lorelai and Rory. The Unionville gazebo is regularly decorated for different seasons and holidays, making it the perfect spot for photos or simply enjoying a cup of coffee.

The Old Firehall Confectionery was not an actual filming location in the show. However, it served as the inspiration for Taylor’s Olde Fashioned Soda Shoppe. In Gilmore Girls, the soda shop was a place where the characters gathered and shared sweet moments. A real-life sweets shop that captures a similar vibe is Sweetie Pie. Here, you can enjoy cookies, pies, ice cream, and other treats, making it the perfect spot to stop for dessert after exploring the area.

Stars Hollow in Real Life

Spending a day in Unionville is the perfect fall and holiday activity, especially if you want to experience life like you’re in Stars Hollow. With so many places to visit, you’re sure to have a fun time exploring the town’s charming energy and slow pace.
