Living near the water has long been romanticized, with many people dreaming of a house by the sea or a cabin by a tranquil lake. But beyond the picturesque views and the calming sounds of the waves, is there any real benefit to living near water?

The Pros of Living Near Water

Improved Mental Health and Well-Being

Multiple studies have shown that being close to natural water bodies, such as lakes, rivers, and oceans, positively affects mental health. One study highlights the link between living near water and improved mental health, stating that coastal living is associated with fewer mental health problems, lower rates of stress, and a greater sense of overall well-being. Being near water provides natural beauty and tranquility, reducing anxiety and boosting mood.

Another study published in PubMed emphasizes how exposure to natural environments, including water, can reduce psychological stress and increase cognitive functioning. Water’s calming effect is linked to decreased levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and improved emotional states. Simply being near the sound of waves or observing the expansive horizon can trigger a state of relaxation and peace in the mind.

Better Physical Health and Longevity

Research by the University of New Brunswick suggests that living near water may increase life expectancy. According to the study, people who live by the coast or near lakes may live longer, partly due to reduced stress levels and the ability to engage in physical activities like swimming, walking, or biking along the shore. The availability of fresh air and a generally cleaner environment in coastal areas may also affect the health benefits observed in residents near water.

Additionally, physical activity associated with water environments—from beach walks to kayaking—can improve cardiovascular health and overall fitness. When combined with the mental health benefits, these factors make living near water appealing for those seeking a longer, healthier life.

Connection to Nature and Relaxation

Living near water and nature offers a peaceful environment that relaxes the mind, sparking new ideas and creative inspiration. The natural beauty and tranquility help clear mental clutter, encouraging a deeper connection with inner creativity. Research has shown that exposure to nature, particularly water, can improve cognitive function, focus, and a greater sense of relaxation. Nature’s calming influence on the brain is well-documented, and living near water ensures that people can experience these benefits daily.

The Cons of Living Near Water

Exposure to Natural Disasters

While the benefits of living near water are compelling, there are some serious risks. Coastal areas, in particular, can be vulnerable to natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods, and storm surges. Residents near bodies of water are more likely to experience the destructive effects of these events, which can lead to significant property damage and, in extreme cases, loss of life. Even lakes and rivers, which may seem safer, can flood and cause harm during heavy rainfall or rapid snowmelt periods.

Cost of Living and Property Prices

Living near water often has a premium price tag because of high demand. Whether it’s the tranquil shores of Lake Muskoka in Ontario or the sun-soaked beaches of Malibu in California, waterfront properties remain some of the most coveted real estate, making it a good investment that tends to drive up real estate prices, making them unaffordable for many.  In addition, maintenance costs can be higher due to the increased wear and tear from salt water, moisture, and humidity.

Safety and Environmental Concerns

Living near water can also raise environmental concerns, particularly regarding water quality. In coastal areas, pollution can impact water health, potentially affecting the local ecosystem and people nearby. Similarly, freshwater lakes and rivers can be subject to contamination from industrial activities, agriculture, and urban runoff. This can lead to adverse effects that can impact safety or property value. For example, buying a cottage in a lake that eventually becomes overpolluted within a decade will make reselling difficult if it’s no longer safe to swim in or enjoy.

Final Thoughts

Living near water can bring significant health and well-being benefits, from improved mental health to increased longevity. However, it also comes with its share of challenges, including the risk of natural disasters, high property costs, and environmental concerns. Ultimately, the decision to live near water should be based on a balance of these pros and cons, considering the immediate benefits and potential long-term risks and costs associated with waterfront living.
