Living in Ottawa has its perks. Jobs, culture, and walkable neighbourhoods all matter. However, for many buyers, space is becoming increasingly tight, and prices remain high. That’s why more people are looking just outside the city. 

According to Statistics Canada, smaller communities near major cities continue to attract buyers who want more space without giving up access to urban jobs and services. If you’re saving for a home or craving a little more space, these are 11 small towns near Ottawa to consider buying in.

Western Corridor 

West of Ottawa, you’ll find historic towns shaped by rivers, mills, and walkable main streets. These small towns near Ottawa are popular with buyers who value charm, character, and a strong sense of community.

Almonte looks like it belongs on a postcard. In fact, it often shows up in holiday movies. The town is known for its 19th-century limestone buildings and views along the Mississippi River. The Almonte Riverwalk is a local favourite for daily walks and evening strolls.

Residents line up at Baker Bob’s for pastries and browse Cheerfully Made for locally crafted goods. Culture runs deep here, too. The town hosts the Puppets Up! International Puppet Festival celebrates its connection to basketball inventor James Naismith.

Carleton Place 

Carleton Place blends old and new, making it easy to live in. The Mississippi River runs through the centre of town, which means waterfront views, riverside parks, and space to boat or fish. Main Street stays busy on weekends, with locals stopping at Freska for brunch or visiting the Real Wool Shop, which also doubles as a mini museum.

Arnprior

Rockland
