It’s not because of its bright red colour that the home at 5 Arkledun Ave stands out.

The house, known as Hamilton’s “first container home”, was built over the course of 8 years by the homeowner using repurposed steel containers.

Outwardly the home is unmistakably different from its neighbours.

Inside, however, you can hardly tell that it’s the interior of 8 stacked shipping containers.

Shipping container homes have been growing in popularity for their low maintenance costs and eco-friendly qualities.

The original homeowner valued sustainability and made the home energy-efficient with a super-efficient insulation and hydronic heating system.

Some of the container walls are left as playful accents, but the majority of the interior uses drywall like a traditional home.

One aspect of the home that isn’t traditional is its 10 walkouts which provide each member of the household with their own unique balcony.

The 7 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms cover 3600 sq. ft. of living space and include a typical concrete basement as well.

The home is in Corktown within walking distance to St. Joseph Hospital and close to the Go Station, McMaster campus and downtown Hamilton.

With a prime location and plenty of living space, this could make for a unique Airbnb investment.
