When the summer sun turns relentless, there’s one simple escape that offers cool comfort and entertainment under one roof–malls. As heatwaves become more frequent across Southern Ontario, many GTA residents are trading sunny patios for air-conditioned shopping centres.  From luxury shops to arcades, cinemas, and kid-friendly play zones, malls in the GTA are fast becoming go-to spots for summer activities.

Here are 8 of the best malls in Toronto and beyond that offer much more than retail therapy.

Top Malls in the GTA to Beat the Heat

Yorkdale Shopping Centre – Toronto

Yorkdale is one of the best malls in Toronto if you’re looking for a chic, upscale experience. With its sleek design, luxury brands like Chanel and Louis Vuitton, and a food court offering everything from dim sum to poke bowls, it’s ideal for stylish indoor browsing. The Cineplex theatre and spacious, air-conditioned lounges give you even more reason to linger. Plus, it’s directly connected to the subway—perfect for newcomers or tourists exploring without a car.

Massive and modern, Square One is one of Ontario’s largest shopping centres in the GTA, and it has something for everyone. The Food District is a local favourite for artisanal bites and international eats, while The Rec Room adds arcade games, sports simulators, and entertainment that will make you feel like a kid again. For families, the children’s play areas and regular events make it a must-visit. Surrounded by condos and new developments, it’s a great place for renters or buyers to get a feel for the area.

Vaughan Mills – Vaughan

This mall mixes outlet bargains with entertainment. Vaughan Mills is home to LEGOLAND Discovery Centre, a mini indoor amusement park that’s a dream for young kids. Parents can shop name-brand deals while teens explore shops like Bass Pro or the arcade. It’s one of the most family-friendly malls in the GTA, with wide walkways, nursing rooms, and plenty of food court options to fuel the day.

Scarborough Town Centre – Scarborough

Easily accessible by transit, this east-end favourite has a strong multicultural vibe and a fantastic food court featuring global cuisines—from Korean BBQ to Caribbean patties. Scarborough Town Centre also hosts seasonal events, pop-up exhibits, and new store openings year-round. It’s a solid option for anyone seeking indoor things to do in Toronto during hot afternoons.

CF Markville – Markham

Less crowded but just as curated, CF Markville is a local gem for families and suburban shoppers. You’ll find mid-range retailers, an extensive food court, and plenty of spots to sit and snack. Its location makes it a smart pitstop for anyone exploring the east end of the GTA.

Bramalea City Centre – Brampton

For residents in the northwest, Bramalea City Centre delivers a mix of everything. It’s one of the region’s oldest malls, but recently underwent renovations that added new stores and refreshed common areas. It’s ideal for locals or those checking out the Brampton housing market.

Cloverdale Mall – Etobicoke

This smaller, community-centric mall is known for being uncrowded and comfortable. It’s a favourite for seniors and families looking to escape the heat without the hustle and bustle. You’ll find salons, wellness shops, and casual eateries—all with plenty of shaded seating.

Oshawa Centre – Oshawa

As the largest shopping mall in Durham Region, Oshawa Centre is a popular escape for residents in the eastern GTA. Following a major renovation in 2016, the space now features over 230 stores and one of the region’s biggest food courts with seating for more than 1,000. From seasonal story times at Indigo to indoor fitness walks and pop-up shops, there’s always something happening beyond retail. Located right next to the Durham Region Transit terminal, it’s easy to access by bus and well-suited for anyone looking for indoor fun.
