Assess Your Needs

Consider the types of emergencies that are most likely to occur in your area. These could include natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, or man-made emergencies, like power outages or chemical spills. Then, proceed to tailor and adjust your kit as necessary.

Tools and Supplies

Make sure to gather basic tools in case you find yourself having to make any emergency repairs. These can include a multi-tool, wrench, pliers, and screwdriver. Additionally, consider grabbing some duct tape, as well as a utility knife if necessary. You can never be too prepared.

Food and Water

In the case of an emergency, it is crucial to have appropriate amounts of water and food accessible. Choose non-perishable food items that require little to no preparation, such as canned goods, dried fruits, nuts, and protein bars. In terms of water, try and stockpile at least one gallon of water per person per day for drinking and sanitation purposes.

First Aid Kit

Safety always comes first. Put together a comprehensive first aid kit that includes bandages, gauze pads, adhesive tape, antiseptic wipes, scissors, tweezers, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medications in the case of any accidents or injuries.

Lighting and Communication

Make sure to gather all the flashlights, walkie-talkies and battery-operated radios you have in the case of an emergency. Also make it a priority to keep any portable chargers on hand, as you never know when your electronics will need an extra boost.

Personal Hygiene Items

Gather items such as hand sanitizer, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, feminine hygiene products, and any other necessary personal care items to be used when needed.

Entertainment

Consider adding books, playing cards, or other forms of entertainment to help pass the time during an emergency. Sometimes these moments provide the perfect opportunity to be creative when occupying oneself.
