6 Ways To Keep Your House Cool When You Don’t Have Air Conditioning

While the warm weather is enjoyable outside, it’s less fun when inside the house is as warm as outside. If you don’t have A/C, here’s a guide on keeping your home cool with some DIYs and easy tips.

1. Close The Window Coverings

During daylight hours, keep the blinds and curtains closed to block out as much sun as possible. The natural sunlight is lovely, but it also delivers heat straight inside through the windows. This is the easiest way to cool down the house.

2. Add Window Film

If you want to keep your curtains and blinds open, consider installing heat-control window film.  This lets the sun into your house (natural light, yeehaw!), but they also reflect a lot of heat out of it. It also adds  an additional layer of insulation throughout the winter.

3. Exhaust The Heat Out

Turn on the exhaust fans in your kitchen and bathroom to help dissipate heat from the shower or kitchen appliances. You can also use them in conjunction with open windows to help remove hot air from your home and bring in cooler air at night.

4. Make The Most Out Of Fans

Fans are a savior during the hot months, and you can maximize their usage by DIY-ing them into air conditioners. Place a cold, damp sheet in front of the fan, a bowl of ice behind it, or attach frozen water bottles or ziploc bags of frozen water to the back. This will chill the air the fan blows out more than it would on its own.

5. Dehumidify

Excessive humidity can give off an oppressive heat wave and stifle indoor air. Additionally, it may stop sweat from evaporating, which inhibits your body temperature from being regulated. Bring in a good dehumidifier to help remove extra moisture.

6. Reduce Your Use Of Appliances

The stove and oven generate unwanted heat, so try to stick to barbequing or no-cook recipes. Although small appliances and phone chargers can produce heat in your house, washers, dryers, and dishwashers are likely the worst offenders. Turn off everything that isn’t required, or better yet, unplug it.
