The new year has arrived and with it, the latest flooring trends. Every year that flooring techniques advance, it offers more possibilities for designs and new preferences. If you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to update or replace your floors, then 2020 is the year! Styles, textures, and colours are all seeing a shift in popularity, making creativity the new rule of design!

Whether you’re renovating to sell your home or to improve the home you already love, here are the top three flooring trends of 2020:

Styles: Adding visual interest to layouts

Traditional flooring style is a basic format of laying each plank of tile down side by side. This style of flooring offers a classic look that you can’t go wrong with, but if you’re feeling bold, the new trend is patterns – lots of them. Both Chevron and Herringbone are perfect options as they both offer a very interesting visual style without deterring from the classic look. If you prefer tiles, the same patterns will also apply to them, though honeycomb and modular are also popular patterns for tile. Visit those tile companies in Calgary to get a few samples and ideas. You can even combine floor types and patterns for a customized look!

Open floor concepts pair quite nicely with patterned floors. Adding some visual interest to your floor will help break up any sense of expansiveness in a large room or series of connected rooms. It also helps add some of that eye-catching feature to your floor, which can help pull a room together or make your floor stand out. That being said, if you like the look of a straight lay, but want a little pizazz, try installing it diagonally. That way, you get the look of a straight lay, but still with some style to it!

Textures: smooth is classic, textured is new

Smooth floors are another of those ageless classics that will always be an option for your renovation. However, it looks like textured flooring over a smooth finish is on-trend for 2020. Texturing your floor will not only change how it looks visually, but it will also change the feel of the floor.

Some, such as wire-brushed, add a degree of roughness to the floor that can help make it slip-resistant. Handscraped, wire-brushed and distressed are the most popular choices, but embossed and French bleed also make for beautiful finishes. Calgary flooring companies will have a lot to offer, so take your time browsing!

The type of texture you choose will help determine the design theme of the room. For example, wire-brushed is ideal for a more subtle, elegant addition. Distressed is perfect if you want a vintage feel. Scraped or brushed floors, as a bonus, won’t show scuffs and marks in high-traffic places such as playrooms or living rooms!

Colours: high variation is the new choice

The classic light floors such as grays, blondes, and honey are still popular, but as a part of a more colourful variation. For example, instead of just having a variety of light floor colours in your home, have slightly different shades for each space. Or, install a Chevron pattern with different coloured hardwood for each panel.

This bright variation and contrast in colours are the new trend— but don’t have too many bold contrasts. Different types of flooring can be a great look, just as long as they aren’t a mix of dark and light colours. And remember to pick a colour that will fit the room.

With that in mind, basic rules will still apply. Large rooms, for example, will still pair well with dark floors. It helps add a sense of coziness and grandness to a large space without making it feel too dark. Likewise, small rooms are better off with lighter-coloured floors.

Creativity and a blend of colours, patterns, and textures are the new trends for this year. Still, keep in mind the basic rules of design. Use the colour scheme rules, elements that complement each other, and choose a focal point to work around.
