Every story, TV show, or movie needs a setting that brings the world to life and makes everything feel real. Many of the most memorable fictional TV towns are so loved because they’re inspired by real places that give them depth, character, and authenticity. From cozy small-town streets to beautiful waterfront communities, here are five fictional towns inspired by real places.

Gilmore Girls: Stars Hollow – Washington, CT

The fictional town of Stars Hollow from Gilmore Girls draws inspiration from Washington, a picturesque town in Connecticut. Like Stars Hollow, Washington is known for its classic New England charm and historic architecture. Its small-town streets and close-knit community helped shape the quaint, welcoming atmosphere that makes Stars Hollow so comforting to viewers. It’s said that show creator Amy Sherman-Palladino’s stay at the real-life Mayflower Inn served as inspiration for the town’s creation.

Beyond inspiring the show, Washington itself has a timeless storybook feel with rolling hills, forests, farmland, and rivers surrounding the town center. The town is also known for its vibrant arts scene, featuring galleries, theaters, and local traditions such as the Harvest Festival. Its tranquil environment makes it a popular weekend spot for visitors.

Stranger Things: Hawkins – Durham, NC

Hawkins, the eerie and mysterious town from Stranger Things, was loosely inspired by Durham, North Carolina, the hometown of the show’s creators, the Duffer Brothers. The News & Observer reported The Duffer Brothers saying that the setting for Hawkins is an amalgam of fictional towns, the atmosphere of 1980s horror, and Durham.

Durham is a vibrant city with suburban neighborhoods, historic streets, and nearby forests. It blends small-town charm with plenty of natural scenery. The city is home to Duke University, a major presence in the region. As part of the Research Triangle, Durham is also known for its high-tech research and medical advancements.

While Durham provided the perfect blueprint for Hawkins, the show’s suspenseful and dark atmosphere comes from reimagining Durham’s quiet streets, wooded areas, and small-town charm. Putting these elements together helped transform Durham into the inspiration for the unsettling yet typical small-town setting of Hawkins.

It’s a Wonderful Life: Bedford Falls – Seneca Falls, NY

With its snowy winters and historic charm, Seneca Falls, NY, naturally reflects many of the qualities seen in Bedford Falls from It’s a Wonderful Life. Both towns feature traditional storefronts, old-fashioned buildings, and a walkable downtown. Seneca Falls is known for its canal and arched bridges, which strongly resemble the iconic bridge scenes in the film, and one of them is even named in honor of It’s a Wonderful Life.

In winter, Seneca Falls transforms into a classic storybook scene when covered in snow. The town hosts numerous Christmas and winter-themed events, including markets, light displays, and the annual It’s a Wonderful Life Festival. Located near the Finger Lakes, it provides stunning winter landscapes with frozen waterfalls, forests, and open farmland. Nearby rivers and parks offer opportunities for ice skating, winter walks, and photography.

Dawson’s Creek: Capeside – Wilmington, NC

A post shared by Wilmington, NC (@cityofwilm)

Capeside, the fictional coastal town of Dawson’s Creek, was modeled after Wilmington, North Carolina. Nestled between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean, Wilmington combines scenic waterways, small-town streets, and a historic downtown. Together, these aspects inspired the close-knit, small-habor town of Capeside.

Known as “Hollywood East” for its frequent filming and favorable climate, Wilmington has become a major production hub. Hit shows like The Summer I Turned Pretty and One Tree Hill have both filmed there. The city is also recognized for its museums and art galleries that showcase local culture. The Cape Fear Museum of History and Science is a well-known highlight. Another landmark is Battleship North Carolina, which attracts many visitors.

Virgin River: Virgin River – Vancouver, BC

Set in the natural landscapes of Vancouver, British Columbia, the fictional town of Virgin River takes inspiration from the area’s natural surroundings. In addition to Vancouver, much of the show was filmed in surrounding areas, including Bowen Island, Squamish, and Langley, capturing a variety of small-town streets, rivers, and lush forests. Virgin River is portrayed as a cozy town surrounded by mountains, with nature central to the characters’ daily lives.

Outdoor activities thrive in Vancouver; residents and visitors can enjoy hiking trails, ski slopes, biking paths, and kayaking along the city’s waterfronts. The city features a mix of modern skyscrapers and residential neighborhoods, blending urban life with its natural landscapes. Home to the University of British Columbia and multiple research centers, Vancouver is also known for its academic influence.

From Screen to Real Life

These fictional TV towns feel so authentic because they’re based on real places. This connection makes them memorable and beloved by audiences who find comfort in these settings.
