Nobody wants to spend more than they need to on energy costs. As a renter, it can be difficult to reduce your monthly bills without making major changes or renovations that you may not have permission or funding for. But there are still some simple steps you can take to lower your energy costs without breaking the bank. Here are a few to get you started:

Upgrade Your Lightbulbs

One of the easiest ways to reduce your energy bills is to switch out your light bulbs for LED or compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). These bulbs use significantly less electricity than traditional incandescent bulbs and can last several years with proper maintenance and usage. What’s more, many Canadian utilities offer discounts or rebates for customers who purchase energy-efficient bulbs.

Unplug Your Appliances

Another easy way to lower your energy bills is to unplug any appliances that you don’t need on a daily basis, such as TVs, computers, DVD players and game consoles. Even when these devices are off, they can still be drawing energy from the wall if they’re plugged in. Unplugging them completely when you don’t need them is an easy way to save on your monthly electricity bill.

Insulate Your Windows

If you’re renting a place, chances are you don’t have control over the quality of insulation in the walls. But as a renter, you can still make improvements to your windows. Insulating your windows with plastic film or interior window insulation kits is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce your energy bills in the winter. It’s also easy to install and remove when it comes time for you to move out.

Adjust Your Thermostat

Adjusting your thermostat is one of the simplest ways to reduce your energy bill. During the winter months, aim to keep your home at a lower temperature during the day and at night. In the summer, try to keep it higher than normal when you’re out of the house or sleeping. This can help you save on heating and cooling costs without compromising on your comfort.

Utilize Natural Lighting

Take advantage of natural lighting when you can to save money on electricity costs. Open up the blinds or curtains during the day and avoid using artificial lights when possible. Not only will this reduce your energy bills, but it can also help boost your productivity and mood.

By following these simple tips, you can dramatically reduce your energy costs as a renter. All it takes is some smart planning and effort – so get started today!
