Top 7 Family-Friendly Neighbourhoods in Mississauga

Mississauga is a city that has seen significant growth over the years, becoming the second most populated city in the Greater Toronto Area and the third most populated city in all of Ontario. Due to its proximity to Toronto and housing the biggest international airport, Toronto Pearson, the city has long been a favourite choice for Ontarians.  

Real estate in Mississauga can offer families an ideal area to raise kids with spacious homes and more affordable price tags. Taking into account access to transportation, schools, safety and sense of community, we pulled the top 8 family-friendly neighbourhoods in Mississauga as well as their average home price as of Q2 2020. 

Ranging from $825,208 to $1,783,209, the following list is sorted from the most affordable to the least affordable neighbourhood based on the price of an average home.

1. Erindale

1125 Pomona Crt

Average home price: $825,208

Located east of the Credit River Valley, Erindale is a quiet neighbourhood home to the University of Toronto Mississauga campus and also Sheridan Park Public school. The lush area offers plenty of greenspace for families who might enjoy a picnic out at Erindale Park, which covers 222-acres of nature. 

Housing in this area is typically more affordable and features detached homes with a larger square footage – perfect for families with young children looking for a little more space.

2. Streetsville 

5591 Turney Drive

Average home price: $855,796

Streetsville is a neighbourhood characterized by older, charming bungalows and local shops lining Main St, including the infamous Murphy’s Ice Cream Parlor. Nicknamed The Village in The City, Streetsville carries a strong sense of community and often holds events in the Village Square such as the Bread and Honey Festival in the summer.

From condos to hundred-year-old two-storey gems, Streetsville offers a variety of homes for all family types. Other amenities in the neighbourhood include Vista Heights Public School and Streetsville GO Station.

3. Clarkson

54 – 2440 Bromsgrove Rd

Average home price: $890,895

The community of Clarkson is growing to become a popular neighbourhood with recent developments in the local scene of shops and restaurants. It is also home to Jack Darling Memorial Park, a sizable park on Lake Ontario. Home prices in this area can be modest and appeals to smaller families who want the space to raise kids but also the option to commute into the city via the Clarkson GO Station.

4. Central Erin Mills

5551 Middlebury Dr W

Average home price: $950,628

Central Erin Mills is well-known for their selection of excellent schools including John Fraser Secondary School, which offers AP (advance placement) programs and safe homes with plenty of curb-appeal. Family-friendly amenities in the area include the Erin Meadows Community Centre & Library and Erin Mills Town Centre.

With easy access to Hwy 403, the central location of this neighbourhood is a popular spot for families who need to commute for work. Properties in Erin Mills offer a variety – from condo apartments, to townhouses to detached homes.

5. Sheridan

2369 Wadding Cres

Average home price: $1,060,032

Sheridan is a desirable neighbourhood for many families with wide lots, quiet streets and a mix of neighbours from young families to retirees. Amenities in the area include shopping, restaurants and easy access to Hwy 403/the QEW. Notable parks and walking trails nearby  include Springbank Meadows Park and Thornlodge Park.

6. Port Credit

44 Minnewawa Rd

Average home price: $1,152,491

Also known as Mississauga’s waterfront community, Port Credit is a pocket of history located along the shores of Lake Ontario. Homes in Port Credit offer a mix of homes, ranging from charming cottage-like detached houses to sleek condo apartments. 

The area includes magnificent harbour views, beaches, and amenities within walking distance such as J.C. Saddington Park and Kenollie Public School, one of the top-rated schools in the city. This neighbourhood is ideal for families who enjoy a village-like community while still being close to downtown Toronto, which is easily accessible with the Port Credit GO Station.

7. Lorne Park

1058 Spence Court 

Average home price: $1,783,209 

Lorne Park is one of the most exclusive neighbourhoods in Mississauga, with homes that boast plenty of land and are on the higher-end. Although home prices in this neighbourhood are usually on the steeper side, they also promise tree-lined streets, proximity to the waterfront and excellent schools like Lorne Park Secondary School.

Properties in this neighbourhood range from older, wide-lot bungalows to custom-built detached houses.
