Mississauga City Guide

The municipality of Mississauga is situated just west of Toronto and is the sixth-most populous city in Canada. Due to its proximity to Toronto, the city has experienced immense growth in population. It is home to the Toronto Pearson International Airport, which is Canada’s busiest, and a variety of other major corporate headquarters for Canadian businesses. Similarly to Toronto, the population is diverse and multicultural with 57.1% of its population identified as a visible minority.

Living in Mississauga


According to the 2016 Canadian Census, there are 721,599 people living within the city of Mississauga. This represents 1.1% growth from the 2011 Census population of 131,400. This is comparatively less than both Ontario’s overall growth rate of 4.6% and Canada’s growth rate of 5.0%.

While once a rapidly-growing city, the population growth rate moderated after 2016, falling below the national and provincial average. A total of 57.1% of this multicultural city’s population identifies as a visible minority, with the most visible minority groups including South Asian, Chinese, and Black Canadians.


The Peel District School Board governs 198 elementary schools and 36 secondary schools across the city with 154,000 students.

Mississauga is home to several major shopping centres including Square One, Erin Mills Town Centre, as well as Dixie Outlet Mall.


There are currently no professional sports teams that belong to Mississauga. Because Mississauga is part of the Greater Toronto Area, most residents will cheer on teams from Toronto like the Raptors and Blue Jays.

Mississauga Airbnb Regulations

As of December 2017, Mississauga issued new short-term rentals rules, in line with rules introduced Toronto, to regulate the Airbnb market. The new rules will prohibit the use of secondary or “non-principal-residence” homes as Airbnb short-term rentals. A large percentage of condo boards in Mississauga already have strict guidelines against Airbnb rentals.

Mississauga Infrastructure

Public Transportation

MiWay is Mississauga’s main transit system, operating a fleet of buses which service the entire city. Although there are currently no plans for any rapid transit system to be implemented in the city, it neighbours the Toronto rapid transit system, the TTC. A majority of major routes run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A one-way fare on the Mississauga Transit system is $3.75 for adults, youth and seniors. A monthly pass can be purchased for $130 a month for adults and $61 for seniors.


Mississauga is serviced by two international airports: Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ).

YYZ is currently the busiest airport in Canada, handling over 45 million passengers annually. Pearson airport is located in Etobicoke, a 30-minute drive from the city core, and is the main air traffic hub for the Greater Golden Horseshoe region. Pearson has over 1,100 daily departures to more than 180 destinations around the world.

YTZ is a small international airport that is located on the Toronto Islands just south of Lakeshore Boulevard. Porter Airlines and Air Canada are the two primary airlines that serve this small airport, which has daily departures to nearby cities in both Canada and the US.


The biggest taxi company that operates in Mississauga is Mississauga Taxi. Because taxis are difficult to hail on the go, it is best to book in advance or visit a train station or hotel where they are usually parked waiting for passengers.

An alternative to hiring a taxi in Mississauga is Uber. Currently, Uber offers an expansive selection of options in Mississauga including UberX, UberXL, UberSELECT, POOL, UberBLACK, UberSUV, UberAssist, and UberWAV.


Mississauga is serviced by seven major highways, the busiest being the Ontario 401 that runs from Windsor all the way to Quebec border on the east side of Ontario. The Queen Elizabeth Way, another busy corridor, brings traffic to and from the Niagara region and towards the US-Canada border. Other smaller notable highways include the Ontario 403, 409, 410 and 427.


The city’s hospitals are part of the Trillium Health Partners network that encompass three main sites. The hospitals include Credit Valley Hospital, Mississauga Hospital, and Queensway Health Centre.
