Decorating for the holidays can get overwhelming and can become quite expensive. Between the Christmas lights, the tree, all the festive table mats, the mantle decor and buying all the gifts, it is safe to say that Christmas preparation is not always budget-friendly, but that’s not to say that it can’t be. Here are 6 DIY holiday decor items that elevate your home, while being easy on the bank account:

Handmade Ornaments: 

Create personalized ornaments by filling clear glass or plastic ornaments with items like glitter, small pinecones, or confetti. You can also add photos or messages inside. These can also be great gifts and just household items when filled with festive trail mix or hot chocolate. Try adding a little ribbon on it to give it the festive cherry on top!

Pinecone Centrepiece:

Collect pinecones and arrange them in a decorative bowl or basket. Add a touch of sparkle by spraying them with metallic paint or dusting them with glitter. You can also tie a ribbon on them with a string and hang them on the Christmas tree as a little ornament. Other ideas include painting them and placing them around your home as little Christmas trees. These inexpensive, fun activities add that extra festive sparkle for your guests and family!

Paper Snowflakes:

Paper snowflakes are a classic addition to your home’s holiday decor. Using white paper or creative festive colours, cut out paper snowflakes and hang them around the house. Consider adding a bit of sparkle by lightly spraying them with glitter and then try hanging them to your windows and walls by creating a garland using invisible thread

Cinnamon Stick Candles:

Wrap cinnamon sticks around candles and secure them with twine or ribbon. The warmth from the candles will release a subtle cinnamon fragrance, adding a cozy and festive atmosphere. Not only does it smell like Christmas ambiance, but it also looks very raw, earthy and festive.

Sock Snowmen:

Turn old white socks into adorable snowmen. Fill them with rice, tie off sections with twine, and decorate with buttons, felt, and small accessories. Adding baby socks on their head for a little hat, some ribbon for a scarf and buttons can help create a little town of snowmen on your mantle that will add to the cozy and festive look for guests.

DIY Advent Calendar:

Create a personalized advent calendar using small envelopes or pouches. Fill them with treats, notes, or small gifts and arrange them in the shape of a Christmas tree or hang them on a decorative board. Your loved ones will love this even more as a gift because it is personalized for them and they understand you took the time to show how much you love them!
