Now that spring has sprung, Cinco de Mayo often kicks off the unofficial start to patio season. But before you snag a table at your favorite margarita and taco spot, it’s a good idea to brush up on the significance of Cinco de Mayo.

The History Behind May 5th

Many believe Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day, but it actually marks the historic Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, where Mexican forces achieved a surprising victory over the French. This battle is not celebrated nationwide in Mexico but is a regional event primarily observed in Puebla. Over time, however, Cinco de Mayo has gained traction across North America as a lively celebration of Mexican culture and heritage.

The day particularly commemorates General Ignacio Zaragoza’s leadership during the Battle of Puebla, where his outnumbered troops defeated a stronger French army. In a nutshell, this victory is celebrated as a symbol of Mexican resilience and resistance to foreign domination.

How to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Understanding this history is the first step in showing respect and appreciation for the day’s significance. While Cinco de Mayo is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Mexican culture, here’s how to celebrate the day respectfully:

  • Support Authentic Mexican Businesses: Instead of opting for the nearest fast-food chain, seek out local Mexican-owned restaurants and businesses. Not only does this help support the community economically, but it also provides a more authentic experience. Cooking traditional recipes from Mexican chefs is another excellent way to honor Mexican culture.
  • Attend Local Events: Seek out events hosted by Mexican groups that feature art, singing, or dancing, especially those that support local organizations. Many U.S. cities also have family-friendly Cinco de Mayo parades, so be sure to look up if any are happening in your area.
  • Decorate With Bright Colours: Instead of resorting to stereotypical and potentially offensive props like sombreros, consider using “papel picados” for decoration. This traditional craft involves intricate designs cut out of colorful paper and can be a fun, respectful way to decorate. The best part of all, they’re as easy to make as a paper snowflake, and are a great craft to do with kids. Brightly colored tablecloths and vibrant flowers can also enhance the festive atmosphere without appropriating cultural symbols.

Cinco de Mayo is a perfect time to enjoy and learn about Mexican culture. By understanding the history behind it and celebrating authentically and respectfully, we can really celebrate Mexican culture’s influence in our cities and provinces.
