Millennials are leading the charge as the largest group of homebuyers. According to the National Association of Realtors, 38% of home buyers are millennials. This generation is driving new trends, especially when it comes to home features and design choices. Whether you’re designing or selling a home, understanding their preferences is key. Using data from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), we’ve rounded up some of the most sought-after features homebuyers are looking for.

Energy Star appliances

Millennial homebuyers want to save energy whenever possible, which is why Energy Star-rated appliances are high on their wish lists when buying a new home. The Energy Star label is a trusted government-backed symbol of energy efficiency. These appliances help reduce energy bills and contribute to a smaller carbon footprint, aligning with millennials’ values of sustainability. Whether it’s a refrigerator, washer, or dishwasher, these eco-friendly appliances help homeowners save money while supporting green living.

Patio

As work-from-home arrangements and flexible schedules continue to define our dynamic lifestyles, outdoor spaces have become an extension of the living area. Patios are now a must-have feature for many millennials, offering a peaceful retreat for both relaxation and entertainment. Whether it’s a cozy spot for your morning coffee or an inviting area for weekend BBQs, a well-designed patio creates a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living spaces.

A patio offers a range of benefits beyond aesthetics. It encourages more time outdoors, which is great for both physical and mental well-being. Its versatility allows it to serve as the perfect setting for hosting friends and family, workspace, or as a private place to unwind. A well-crafted patio can significantly increase your home’s value, making it more attractive to potential buyers and boosting your resale price when it’s time to sell.

Quartz or engineered stone for kitchen countertops

When it comes to kitchen design, millennials are increasingly choosing high-end materials like quartz and engineered stone for their countertops. These surfaces blend durability with current aesthetics, providing a sleek, low-maintenance option that holds up to daily wear and tear. Plus, their stain-resistant qualities make them ideal for handling food spills. If you’re considering a kitchen renovation, switching to quartz countertops could be the perfect choice. This feature simplifies cleaning and requires minimal maintenance, ensuring a long-lasting, functional, and beautiful addition to the kitchen.

Lighting control systems

Smart home technology is a priority for many buyers, with smart lighting systems leading the way. These systems allow homeowners to adjust lighting based on the time of day or specific activities, enhancing both convenience and ambiance. Whether dimming the lights for a cozy movie night or brightening a room for reading, smart lighting adds luxury and efficiency to any home.

Smart lighting isn’t the only way home buyers want to add tech to their homes.  “Technology features are becoming increasingly popular, most notably security cameras, wired home security systems, programmable thermostats, video doorbells, multizone HVAC systems, and energy management systems,” the NABH stated in the 2024 study.

Garage storage

Millennials value organized, clutter-free living spaces, and the garage is no exception. Millennial homebuyers are seeking garages with ample storage solutions. Additions like custom shelving, overhead storage racks, or designated spaces for bikes and outdoor gear, can be priceless additions for the buyer.

Front porch

There’s a timeless charm to a front porch, and buyers are rediscovering the appeal of a proper front entrance. Front porches have long been a classic design element in homes, and with a few thoughtful touches, they can become the perfect retreat. A cozy seating arrangement, such as a small table or a couple of chairs, can create a relaxing atmosphere. Add a touch of greenery with plants or flowers, and you’ll set the stage for a warm and inviting first impression of your home.

Outdoor fireplaces

Another popular outdoor feature millennials are seeking is an outdoor fireplace. This addition extends the use of outdoor living spaces into the colder months. It can create a warm, cozy environment for family gatherings, intimate conversations, or simply unwinding after a busy day. Whether you choose a gas fireplace or a more traditional wood-burning option, outdoor fireplaces offer a luxurious yet practical way to enhance outdoor living.

As the largest group of homebuyers in 2025, millennials are redefining what makes a dream home. From energy-efficient appliances to stylish outdoor spaces, their preferences are shaping the future of home design. By incorporating these trending features, home sellers and builders can cater to the desires of this savvy and environmentally-conscious generation.
