You wake up with itchy eyes and a stuffy nose—again. Maybe it’s the changing seasons, or maybe it’s something lingering in the air inside your home. The truth is, indoor allergens are a common issue in many Canadian homes. The good news? You can reduce allergens in your home with a few simple changes. Whether you’re prepping a new home before move-in or refreshing your current space, these six tips will help you breathe easier.

Jump Ahead

  • Air Filters and HVAC Maintenance
  • Bedding
  • Humidity and Mold Prevention
  • Pet Grooming and Dander Management
  • Decluttering and Dusting Tips
  • Low-Allergen Flooring

Upgrade Your Air Filters and HVAC Maintenance

Your home’s heating and cooling system can either help trap allergens or spread them around. One of the easiest ways to reduce allergens in your home is to regularly replace your air filters like HEPA filters. These are designed to capture fine particles like pollen, pet dander, and dust.

If you’ve recently moved into a new home or haven’t had your system checked in a while, schedule an HVAC tune-up. Professionals can clean your ducts and check for buildup that may be circulating indoor allergens through the vents. This is especially important in older homes or when transitioning to a new climate, where seasonal allergies may be more pronounced.

Wash and Replace Bedding Regularly

Your bed might be cozy, but it’s also a hotspot for dust mites. These microscopic creatures thrive in warm, humid environments and often hide in fabrics like sheets, comforters, and pillowcases. One of the most effective home allergy tips is to wash all bedding in hot water at least once a week.

Consider investing in allergen-proof mattress and pillow covers for an added layer of protection. And if you have sensitive skin, opt for fragrance-free or natural laundry detergents.

Control Humidity and Prevent Mold

High humidity creates the perfect environment for mold, one of the most stubborn indoor allergens. Aim to keep your home’s humidity level between 30% and 50%, and use dehumidifiers in areas prone to dampness, such as basements, bathrooms, and laundry rooms.

Don’t forget to check under sinks, around windows, and behind appliances for signs of leaks or water damage. If you’re buying a home, be sure to inspect areas prone to mold before finalizing your purchase.

Pet Grooming and Dander Management

We love our pets, but their fur and dander? Not so much. Pet allergens can linger in carpets, furniture, and even the air. If you have furry friends, regular grooming is key. Bathe and brush your pets often (ideally outside) to keep shedding under control. Vacuuming with a HEPA filter vacuum cleaner can also help capture dander and prevent it from spreading.

Declutter and Dust Strategically

A woman uses a yellow duster to clean a chair.

Not only does clutter create chaos, but it also gives allergens more places to hide.  The more knick-knacks and fabric items you have, the more surfaces dust and other allergens can settle on. To reduce allergens in your home, try decluttering regularly and dusting with a microfiber cloth that traps particles instead of spreading them.

Always dust before vacuuming to catch any items that fall to the floor. And take a closer look at your window treatments. Heavy drapes can collect dust, so consider switching to washable curtains or easy-to-clean blinds.

Choose Low-Allergen Flooring and Materials

If you’re renovating or shopping for a new home, your flooring choices can have a big impact on allergies. Carpets, especially in humid areas, tend to trap dust, dander, and other allergens in the house. Hardwood, tile, or laminate are easier to keep clean and don’t hold onto particles the same way.

Also, consider your paint and finish choices. Look for low-VOC (volatile organic compound) products, which release fewer fumes and are gentler on sensitive systems. These upgrades create a healthier environment for everyone!
