How To Transition Your Closet For Cooler Weather

September is here, and that means the weather will start cooling down. It’s almost time to say goodbye to your shorts and cute summer dresses and pull out the sweaters and jeans. Bring out the seasonal pieces and prep your closet for the transition to fall.

Divide and Donate

Not everything you stored from last year likely fits or goes with your current style. Start a donation pile, and as you go, swap out clothes and add the clothing articles you no longer need or want.

Additionally, now is a great time to go through your summer clothing. If you have pieces of clothing that you went all season without wearing, it might be time to let them go. This goes for shoes and accessories, as well.

Prep For Next Year

Take a little additional time to ensure that every seasonal item you’re storing is clean and ready to wear the following year. Your future self will be appreciative.

It’s best to thoroughly wash and fold any seasonal apparel before storing it for a few months. Divide clothing into piles for what can be cleaned at home and what should go to the dry cleaners, including any jackets, coats, or special-occasion items. Before putting your cleaned seasonal clothing into storage containers, make sure it is totally dry. Mold and mildew issues are sure to arise when damp clothing is kept in a closed area without any ventilation.

Cold Weather Clothes

Swap out your summer sandals for boots, and bring out all the mittens and hats you’ll need to brave the colder weather. Check all your jackets and coats for wear and tear, empty out the pockets of last year’s trash, and make sure all your gloves and mittens have a twin.

How to Store Clothing Between Seasons

If you want to free up space in your closet and dresser, try storing your out-of-season clothing outside of your usual clothing storage. Guest room closets are perfect for housing all non-winter clothing, but if you don’t have an extra closet, there are many other great options.

Vacuum-compression bags are fantastic for fitting more into your space. Fill a bag with seasonal clothes (excluding garments like down jackets, anything ‘puffy’, and clothing items made from leather, silk, cashmere, and wool) and use your household vacuum to remove all air from the bag, compressing it much flatter and making it easier to store.

Utilize space under your bed or at the top of your closet with plastic or fabric bins, or if you’re not much of a traveler, fill your empty suitcases until you need to use them again. If your closet is on the larger side, you can designate one-half for seasonal clothes, just to keep yourself more organized and simplify picking out your outfit.
