Winter Wonders: Unwrapping the Best Holiday Activities in Southern Ontario

With the holiday season fast approaching, there are plenty of festive activities currently running or coming very soon! Whether you’re in search of family-friendly delights, crafting the perfect date itinerary, or seeking solo adventures, we’ve got you covered. Dive into this delightful list of seasonal activities across Southern Ontario that will make your winter merry and bright!

Toronto Holiday Events

The Distillery Winter Village

An iconic Toronto destination, the Distillery District has been transformed into the famous Winter Village which is open from now until January 7th. This event is hosted annually and for the second year in a row, Dior has sponsored the event, showcasing a sparkling tree as the centerpiece. There is live music, vendor cabins selling trinkets and treats, charming retail stores, plenty of food options and the iconic love sign where you can purchase a lock to personalize and lock in your love! Visits past 4 PM on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and between December 18-31 will require tickets, to be purchased online only. Children under the age of 9 get in for free! Be sure to keep in mind the admission requirements when planning your visit!

The Cavalcade of Lights at Nathan Phillips Square

The Cavalcade of Lights hosted at Nathan Phillips Square transforms the space in front of City Hall into a dazzling holiday wonderland. The event runs from November 25th to January 7th and has no admission fee. Once you’re done exploring and taking pictures with the sparkling lights, you might want to skate across the ice located right on the other side of the iconic Toronto sign. Bring your own skates or rent a pair for 2 hours at $15 for adults and $10 for those 12 and under. 

Castle Loma: Christmas at the Castle and Holiday Lights 

From now until January 6th, Casa Loma is hosting two different events, the Christmas at the Castle is a family-friendly event with a wide range of activities for everyone to enjoy, impressive holiday decor, and 10 unique trees that have been arranged by different Canadian designers, and an opportunity for children to visit Santa in his workshop, participate in arts and crafts, and more. The Holiday Lights is a self-guided tour around the castle grounds perfect for those looking for a less crowded walk-through experience of the festive decor and themed lights. Admission fees for the Christmas at the castle are $45 per person (children 3 and under can enter for free with an accompanying adult). While the Holiday Lights costs $45 online or $25 if you choose to upgrade your Christmas at the Castle ticket to include the Holiday Lights.

Niagara Holiday Events

Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights

From now until January 7th, experience the twinkling winter wonderland made up of over 3 million lights and over 75 colour displays along the Niagara Parkway, Dufferin Islands, and Across the tourist districts. You can choose to walk or drive through the light display at no cost! If you happen to be in the Niagara Falls area around 8pm, be sure to catch the spectacular fireworks display over the falls. Starting from November 18th, the firework show can be seen every Friday and Saturday night at 8:00 PM, until Saturday December 23rd. From December 24th until January 7th, the fireworks will continue nightly, and a special New Years Eve display can be seen at midnight.

The Hot Chocolate Trail

While admiring the Winter Festival of Lights, explore the new self-guided Hot Chocolate trail that leads you to 17 stops with 23 unique flavours to sip and savour. There are both non-alcoholic and alcoholic options available meaning, everyone will have a blast trying flavours such as classic mint to adventurous cocktails like a Dirty Snowman. Each beverage is priced differently, see the full list of hot chocolate drinks being offered here.

The Niagara SkyWheel

If you are not afraid of heights, consider visiting the SkyWheel which allows riders to see the Niagara Falls horizon including views of the Horseshoe and American Falls, the Niagara River, Niagara Parks, and everything in between. The fully enclosed gondolas are equipped with heating and rides last from 8-12 minutes so you can rest assured that it will be a comfortable ride. Order tickets online for the best deals at $15 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under (not including tax). 

Hamilton Holiday Events

Christmas at Dundurn Castle

Discover the enchanting Dundurn Castle from November 28th to January 7th, featuring a 40-room Italianate-style villa adorned with exquisite holiday decorations during a captivating 1-hour guided tour. Adult admission is $14.75, with varying discounts for seniors and students. Children and infants (5 years or younger) enjoy free entry. Family bundles, accommodating two adults and unlimited dependent children under 18, are available at $40.75. Additionally, the ticket offers a two-for-one deal, providing admission to the Hamilton Military Museum as well!

Winter Wonders at the Royal Botanical Gardens

Winter Wonders is an outdoor evening experience through Hendrie Park’s pathways lined with festive lights and plenty of photo ops along the way. A great selection of handheld foods you and your family can enjoy as you stroll through the park is available. Be sure to purchase tickets online as pricing varies and there are several deals available such as a Table d’hôte Dinner package.

London Holiday Events

Holly Jolly Holiday Market

The Holly Jolly Holiday Market is an exciting half indoor and half outdoor shopping experience with jolly decor and winter themed attractions perfect for all ages including, a hot chocolate station, sleigh rides, light shows, live entertainment, and more! Admission is free but each week has different hours so be sure to check before visiting!

Kitchener Holiday Events

Christkindl Market

The Christkindl Market at Glencolton Farm will transport you to a different time with traditions dating back to the Middle Ages, family-friendly entertainment, and a unique food and drink offering that will keep you warm during your visit! Held only this weekend, December 8th from 4-9 PM and December 9th from 2-9 PM, be sure to purchase your tickets soon!

Windsor Holiday Events

Bright Lights Windsor

Bring your partner, family, friends and even pets! See Jackson Park illuminated with thousands of lights and lovely displays while also enjoying snacks and beverages from the WE Made It: Holiday Market. From December 1st to January 7th, the event will be open nightly from 5:30 to 10 PM and admission is free!

Shopping at Devonshire Mall

If markets and light shows aren’t your cup of tea, consider stopping by Devonshire Mall instead! They are hosting several holiday events throughout the month of December from Story Time with Santa, to Cans for a Cause. While you’re there, you might as well go shopping for any last minute gifts you may have forgotten! Learn more about the holiday events here. 

Guelph Holiday Events

Rockwood Farmers’ Santa Claus Parade of Lights 

A unique parade presented by Rockwood and area farmers who adorn their equipment with thousands of lights and travel through the streets of Rockwood. You can catch the farmers and even Santa Claus passing through the area starting at 7:00 PM on Main Street. Those who want to view the parade from the village of Rockwood should consider visiting early to be able to peruse the shops and grab a meal before the parade begins.

Stratford Holiday Events

Jingle Paws Holiday Market

Support a good cause while embracing the holiday spirit! Paws on Patrol has set up a fundraising event on December 17th from 1:00 to 5:00 PM with free admission! You can expect to find both pet and non-pet themed local vendors, live music, and drinks appropriate for everyone! Don’t forget to bring your furry friends!

Christmas at the Castle

From now until January 7th, visit Castle Kilbride, Wilmot Township’s National Historic site, with guided tours offering insights into the castle’s rich history and special holiday-themed events. Castle Kilbride promises a delightful escape, where the past and the present come together in a celebration of joy and tradition. Purchase tickets online starting at just under $7.

Cambridge Holiday Events

Cambridge Christmas Market

This weekend, visit the Cambridge Christmas Market for 3 floors of shopping, seasonal food, and to feel the holiday spirit! Throughout the two day event, there will be several entertainment acts from bells to bands. Bring a camera and snap a picture with Santa, Mrs. Claus, and Willy Melt as they wander through the market! 

Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory

If you’re looking to get away from the cold this holiday season without going far, try visiting the tropical gardens of Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory with nearly 2,000 butterflies and exotic birds fluttering around. Inside, you’ll also find a cafe and gift shop where you can relax and grab a bite.

Oakville Holiday Events

Christmas at Bronte Creek Park

Experience a Victorian Christmas this holiday season at Bronte Creek Provincial Park! Visits include tours of the decorated farmhouse, heritage crafts, barn and farm animals, and the chance to check out the Friends of Bronte Creek Gift Shop where handmade items are sold. This is a great experience for families with young children!
