Whether you’re going for the minimalist home aesthetic, are downsizing, or simply have too much stuff, decluttering is one of the easiest ways to achieve a minimalist home. Whatever your motivation, here are 7 tips to get you started on reducing clutter and creating a more streamlined, serene living space.

Start Small

Don’t overwhelm yourself by deciding to declutter an entire room in one day. Set manageable goals or divide up a room into different steps. Declutter your dresser before the nightstands, then move onto clothes hung up in the closet, and finally tackle any items stored on shelves or in drawers. This step-by-step approach helps ensure that each area is thoroughly decluttered without feeling overwhelming, making the process more manageable and effective..

Go Through Your Clothes

Many people hang onto pieces of clothing, swearing they’ll wear them again but never do. Try hanging the clothes you’re unsure of parting with backwards on the hanger. If you do end up wearing them, hang them back up properly, and in a few months time you’ll see if you really wear all your clothes or not and can make a decision to declutter them or not.

Fill A Trash Bag/Box

If you’re trying to declutter a whole room/space, grab a trash bag or large box and fill it as fast as possible with things to donate. The goal is to move swiftly, which gives you less time to second-guess your decisions or get caught up in sentimental attachments.

Don’t Be Afraid To Toss Things Away

Not everything can be donated or reused, and sometimes things just need to be thrown away like broken toys, stained or ripped clothing, and mostly empty toiletries. Don’t clutter up Goodwill or other donation sites and properly dispose of what cannot be donated. Textile recyclers and electric waste services are great options instead of simply tossing things in the trash.

Reduce The Pantry

The pantry is usually forgotten in the quest to declutter. Go through what’s inside and dispose of food that’s expired and donate food you’re not going to eat. Packages like cereal boxes and snack packs often take up a lot of space, so consider reusing cute bins and baskets to organize and free up shelf space.

Get The Kids Involved

Kids have a lot of stuff, usually toys. Get them involved in the decluttering process by picking out what toys can go to other kids and which ones they want to keep. This prevents the adults from accidentally donating a favorite toy or stuffy.

Embrace Your Inner Marie Kondo

Does it bring you joy? No? Then toss it away. But keep things that do bring you joy, and just find a place in your home for them. A minimalist lifestyle doesn’t have to mean only owning the bare necessities, but having a place for every item to go to.
