Generosity can be measured in a million different ways. Yet in 2026, as Canadians navigate rising costs for everything from groceries to take-out, perhaps the truest test of kindness is how we treat the people who bring food to our doors.
Alberta’s Home to the Most Generous Canadians
With so many people looking to cut costs, you might expect tipping to be the first thing to go. However, a look at Uber Eats’ January 2026 report on the top tipping cities over the past decade suggests otherwise. Zoocasa analyzed housing costs against these “generous” cities to see what the data really says. Spoiler alert: It’s a lot easier to be generous when you aren’t spending your entire paycheck on high mortgage payments.
If you are searching for a place where prosperity sparks generosity, Alberta stands out for several reasons. Here, residents enjoy the country’s highest median income at $88,500 and are home to two of the top three most generous cities in Canada. Even with detached home prices exceeding a majority of those in other provinces on this list, Calgary leads Canada’s 10 largest census metropolitan areas with a 70.5% homeownership rate, according to Statistics Canada.
Edmonton, in particular, is a sweet spot for giving. Despite being Canada’s fifth-largest city, it offers some of the lowest average rents ($1,591) and detached home prices ($556,752). It turns out that when you aren’t house-poor, you’re more likely to say “keep the change.” Uber Eats even reported Edmonton as one of the most polite cities, based on who says “please,” “thank you,” and “merci” the most. Just like Calgary, Edmonton has one of the highest homeownership rates among big cities in Canada at 68.7%. Notably, both Alberta cities surpass the national homeownerhip average of 66.5%.
Happiness Sparks Generosity in Montreal
Of course, when it comes to the overall city’s well-being, it’s no surprise that happiness and generosity go hand in hand. According to a November 2025 Zoocasa report, Montreal and Mississauga are the only major Canadian cities where happiness scores exceed the national average. However, the price tag for that satisfaction varies wildly between the two.
In Mississauga, where the average home price was $969,501 in fall 2025, residents paid approximately $13,788 per “happiness point.” Meanwhile, Montreal offers a much better bargain: thanks to lower real estate costs, a point of happiness there costs only $8,343. What’s more interesting is that Montreal ranked third among the most generous cities according to Uber Eats, while Mississauga and Toronto did not even rank in the top ten.
Halifax is the Most Generous City on the East Coast
Halifax has long been celebrated for its unrivaled Atlantic hospitality, so it’s a natural fit that the city shines as one of Canada’s top five most generous spots for tipping. As one of the country’s fastest-growing urban centres, Halifax is experiencing an exciting renaissance; immigration has doubled since 2016, and the city maintains a youthful pulse with one in five residents aged 15 to 29.
This surging popularity is a testament to the city’s high quality of life, even as it navigates the transition into a major metropolitan hub. While the high demand has brought rental prices ($2,270) in line with major Ontario cities, it reflects just how many people are eager to be part of the Halifax success story. Even as it grows and evolves, the legendary East Coast spirit remains resilient, ensuring that the city stays as kind and generous as it is prosperous

The Capital City Effect
There is a compelling trend among Canada’s most generous cities: many are provincial or federal capitals, including Edmonton, Halifax, Winnipeg, and Ottawa.
Leading the way in Ontario, Ottawa ranks fifth nationally for generosity, a testament to the city’s thriving economic landscape. As the heart of the federal government, Ottawa provides a unique level of career stability and financial confidence. On average, public sector professionals enjoy 7.9% higher wages than their private-sector peers, supported by some of the most robust pension plans in the country.
Beyond the paycheck, a community’s overall prosperity directly influences how residents interact with delivery people when ordering their favourite takeout. Ottawa was recently ranked by Numbeo as having the highest quality of life in North America for 2026, and this sense of security and optimism seems to have manifested as increased generosity. When people feel confident about their future, especially in a city projected to grow by 46% by 2051, that financial and social “feel-good factor” naturally extends to their delivery drivers through more consistent tipping.
