On the edge of downtown Victoria, Beacon Hill Park brings together nature and city life. It has trails, ocean views, and peacocks that roam freely through the gardens.  This 200-acre park is one of the most loved spots in the city. Locals enjoy quiet walks and family time here while tourists are drawn to its beauty. And for homebuyers, the nearby green space and walkable neighbourhoods are part of what makes the area surrounding Beacon Hill Park one of the best places to live in Victoria.

Morning: Peaceful Walks and Natural Wonders

Start your day early, when the park is still quiet and sunbeams filter through the trees. The rose gardens are a peaceful first stop, filled with vibrant colours and freshly bloomed petals. For ocean lovers, the Dallas Road waterfront trail runs along the park’s edge, offering panoramic views of the Juan de Fuca Strait and the Olympic Mountains in the distance.

Keep your eyes open for peacocks crossing the pathway, and you might spot turtles sunbathing near the ponds or herons perched near the water. For families with young kids, the Beacon Hill Children’s Farm is a must-visit. The goat stampede is a fun highlight, and little ones will love petting bunnies, pigs, and more.

Other attractions throughout the park include:

  • The Story Pole –  first erected in 1956, it stands 127 feet tall
  • The Stone Bridge and Duck Pond – a scenic spot for relaxing or snapping photos
  • Tennis and Pickleball Courts – a great place to enjoy a friendly match in the fresh air
  • The Moss Lady – one of the park’s most whimsical pieces of public art

After a morning of exploring, you’ll be ready for something delicious, and fortunately, you’re in the perfect place for good eats.

Beacon Drive-In

A Victoria staple just across the street from the park. Order a burger and fries or treat yourself to their famous soft-serve swirl with a chocolate dip. It’s delicious and perfect for enjoying on a bench under the trees.

Heron Rock Bistro

A short walk into James Bay brings you to this casual spot. Their crispy fish tacos come with ocean views and a local vibe. They also offer vegetarian options, hearty brunches, and cold drinks on a patio.

Bubby Rose’s Bakery & Cafe

If you’d rather grab something to go, this local favourite on nearby Cook Street offers flaky pastries, pressed sandwiches, and top-notch espresso. Perfect for fueling your afternoon adventure.

Afternoon: Fun, Photos, and Scenic Spots

With lunch taken care of, you’ll have the whole afternoon to continue exploring.

Take a walk to the Mile “0” Marker, the symbolic start of the Trans-Canada Highway. Just beside it is the Terry Fox statue, a moving tribute to the young Canadian who inspired millions. Both are perfect photo ops with the Juan de Fuca Strait in the background. Loop back into the park and explore the Garry Oak meadows, one of BC’s rarest ecosystems. The trails wind through fields of camas flowers in spring and shady pockets ideal for a quick nap or a good book. Near the bandshell, you might catch musicians or buskers filling the air with live music.

There’s no better finale than a sunset walk along the shoreline of Dallas Road bluffs. If you’re up for one last adventure, walk down to Fisherman’s Wharf, just 15 minutes from the park. This floating village of colourful homes and seafood stalls is lively in the evening. Enjoy fish and chips, a glass of wine, or a scoop of local gelato as you stroll the docks.

Prefer something more relaxed? James Bay offers cozy cafés and casual bistros for a laid-back dinner.

A Day Well Spent, A City Worth Exploring
