As winter sets in and temperatures drop, there’s nothing cozier than staying warm and snug inside your home. However, the unwelcome draft that can find its way through gaps and cracks in your home can quickly turn your winter haven into a chilly environment. Fear not! In this blog, we’ll explore the art of draft detection and share some tips on how to seal your home effectively, keeping the winter chill at bay.

1. Identifying the Culprits:

Before effectively sealing your home against drafts, it’s crucial to identify the areas where cold air might be sneaking in. Common culprits include:

  • Windows and doors
  • Gaps around electrical outlets and switches
  • Vents and ducts
  • Cracks in walls and ceilings
  • Gaps around plumbing fixtures

2. The Candle Test:

One simple and effective way to detect drafts is by conducting the candle test. On a windy day, move a lit candle around the edges of windows, doors, and other potential draft sources. If the flame flickers or wavers, you’ve identified a draft. Take note of these areas for later sealing.

3. Weather Stripping:

One of the most efficient ways to seal doors and windows is by using weather stripping. This flexible material creates a tight seal, preventing cold air from seeping in. Apply weather stripping around doors and windows, ensuring a snug fit to keep your home warm and energy-efficient. Weatherstripping costs about $20 and is very effective in keeping your home cozy.

4. Seal Gaps and Cracks:

For smaller gaps and cracks, use caulking to seal them. Check around windows, doors, and other openings, and apply caulking where needed. This simple step can make a significant difference in keeping your home draft-free and tubes of caulking only cost about $14.

5. Insulate Your Home:

Adding insulation to your home is a long-term solution to draft issues. Ensure that your attic and walls are adequately insulated to maintain a consistent indoor temperature. This not only helps with drafts but also contributes to energy efficiency and lower heating costs.

6. Upgrade Windows and Doors:

If drafts persist despite your best efforts, it might be time to consider upgrading to energy-efficient windows and doors. Modern designs come equipped with advanced sealing mechanisms, providing better insulation and reducing drafts.

7. Draft Stoppers:

For a quick fix, consider using draft stoppers at the bottom of doors. These simple, yet effective, tools block the passage of cold air, keeping your living spaces cozy and only cost about $15.
