We’re always looking for ways to enjoy time without a screen, and crafting is the perfect activity to keep kids busy and practice their creativity. Beat the summer boredom and try these five fun crafting projects, ideal for any age. All are made with things you likely already have at home, so no need to go out and buy more supplies.

Bubble Painting

Bubble painting is an easy way to create a piece of art without a paintbrush! Mix half a cup of water with a generous amount of paint and dish soap, and mix well. Blow air into the cup with the straw until it bubbles over on the paper, and once you’re happy with the bubbles, lay another piece of paper on top to create an imprint.

Handmade Cards

It can be for any occasion (or none at all), but homemade cards are always more meaningful than store-bought ones. If you’re a more seasoned crafter or want the challenge, you can find tutorials online to make more complex cards, like pop-outs or 3D ones. Or, keep it simple and go crazy with colour and glitter.

Cardboard Fort

Put those empty Amazon and delivery boxes to good use and fire up your imagination to build your own cardboard abode. Using typical household supplies, like duct tape or twine, design and build a base structure from cardboard, and use blankets or sheets to create doors and a roof. These forts are completely customizable, and kids can decorate the inside and outside as they please. Once kids have gotten bored or the cardboard has been played with too much, it can all be thrown in the recycling bin!

DIY Playdough

There are many  recipes online for homemade playdough (or slime) that you can make your own. Use favorite colors, scents, glitter, charms, and whatever else you can think of. If stored correctly, it can last for months and unlike the store-bought kind, there’s little worry if one of the kids decides to give it a taste.

DIY Chalk Paint

No, not the furniture kind you see all over Pinterest. Chalk paint is easier to use than normal chalk sticks and can be made thicker or thinner to adjust for color preferences. It’s a great way to spend time outside and turn your driveway or sidewalk into a masterpiece!
