Going on vacation is one of the best ways to unwind from the daily grind, however, worrying about your home while you’re away takes away from that needed relaxation. To ensure peace of mind while you’re on your trip, it’s important to take certain steps to prepare your home before you leave. Here’s a checklist of ten essential things to do before leaving for vacation:

Secure All Windows and Doors:

It goes without saying that one of the most crucial steps is making sure all windows and doors are locked.

Set Up a Home Security System:

If you’d like an added sense of protection, consider installing a home security system or smart locks, which range from $100 to $500 depending on the system. This will allow you to monitor your home remotely and receive alerts if there is any unusual activity.

Ask a Trusted Friend or Neighbour to Watch Your Home:

Having someone check on your home periodically helps the home look lived-in. They can bring in the mail, water plants, and ensure everything is in order.

Stop Your Mail and Newspaper Delivery:

A pile of mail or newspapers on your doorstep is a clear sign that no one is home. Mail and newspaper holds are typically free or low-cost, but it’s important to check with your local post office or newspaper provider for their specific policies.

Put Lights on a Timer:

Leaving a light on throughout your trip can not only be costly but dangerous too. Instead, put your lights on a timer so they turn on and off at specific times to make it look like someone is home. A timer for your lights can be purchased for around $10 to $20.

Adjust Your Thermostat:

Set your thermostat to an energy-saving mode or turn it off if you’re away for an extended period.

Unplug Appliances:

Unplug all unnecessary appliances and electronics to save energy and prevent potential electrical issues. These include your air conditioner, computer, monitor, kitchen appliances, chargers, speakers, and power strips.

Clean Out Your Refrigerator:

The last thing you want to return home to is a fridge full of rotten food. Dispose of any food that will expire while you’re away such as fresh fruits, vegetables and bread.

Take Out the Trash:

Similar to leaving rotten food in the fridge, you’ll want to take out the trash before leaving to prevent any odors from building up.

Secure Valuables:

Lock up any valuable items, such as jewelry or important documents, in a safe or secure location.

Going through these 10 simple steps can make all the difference in protecting your home and helping you rest assured that you’ve taken the necessary precautions. After that, all that’s left to do is sit back, relax and enjoy a stress-free vacation.
