Whitby currently holds the second highest population of all towns in Durham region, falling close behind Oshawa. According to the Canadian 2016 Census, there were 128,377 individuals residing in the town of Whitby. This represents a 5.8% increase from their population of 109,600 in 2011. Visible minorities make up 25.0% of Whitby’s population, with the largest groups being African, South Asian, and Chinese.


The Durham District School Board (DDSB) and the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) governs a total of 39 elementary and secondary schools in Whitby.


There are several shopping centres and plazas located throughout Whitby. However, the largest and most popular mall within the area is the Oshawa Centre. With a growing retail mix of up to 260 stores, it has become a highlight of the region and a place of social activities.


Whitby offers a number of maintained parks, playgrounds, trails, and conservation areas. Some of their popular parks include the Kiwanis Heydenshore Park, D’Hillier Park, and Peel Park. Whitby is also known for their Lynde Shore Conservation Area which offers scenic trails perfect for running, hiking, and birdwatching.


There are currently no professional sports teams that belong to Whitby. Being close to Toronto, residents often commute to the city to cheer on teams such as the Raptors, Maple Leafs, and Blue Jays.

Public Transportation

The main forms of transportation in Whitby are serviced by Durham Transit Region (DRT) and GO Transit. Residences can easily explore the town of Whitby using any of the DRT buses, while workers can take GO Transit’s reliable and frequent train services to Toronto using the Lakeshore East rail line.


Residents looking to travel by air can visit the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), which is just a 45 minute drive from Whitby. Handling over 45 million passengers annually, Pearson is the busiest airport in Canada.

The Oshawa Executive Airport (YOO), located just outside of Whitby, is a full-service commercial and general aviation facility with aerial services limited to ambulance, police operations, and passenger charter services.


The biggest taxi company that operates in Whitby is the Durham Rapid Taxi service. Other taxi services include Circle Taxi and Keys To Us. Since taxis are difficult to hail on the go, it is best to book in advance or visit a train station or hotel where they are usually parked waiting for passengers.

An additional option in Whitby includes Uber or Lyft. Currently, Uber offers a more expansive selection of options including UberX, UberXL, UberSELECT, and UberBLACK.


The backbone of Whitby’s road transportation is Highway 401, which runs from Windsor all the way to the Quebec border on the east side of Ontario. Other highways in this region include the Ontario 12, 2, 412 and 401.


Lakeridge Health Whitby is the main destination where residents can obtain hospital services. General area hospitals are also available in surrounding regions such as Ajax, Bowmanville, and Oshawa.
