Waterloo City Guide

Waterloo is the smallest of the tri-cities of Cambridge-Waterloo-Kitchener that make up the Regional Municipality of Waterloo. While there has been serval failed attempts to combine the cities of Waterloo and Kitchener, many still refer to the two municipalities jointly as “Kitchener-Waterloo”.

The city is home to Waterloo University, one of the country’s top universities for engineering and computer science. Waterloo’s economy is support by the high-tech sector with the city’s largest employer being BlackBerry and Sun Life Financial. The city is part of Canada’s Technology Triangle, a join economic development initiative between Waterloo, Kitchener, and Cambridge.

As of the Canada 2016 Census, there are 233,222 people living in the city of Waterloo. This represents a 6.4% growth from the 2011 Census population of 219,153, dramatically higher than both Ontario’s overall growth rate of 4.6% and Canada’s growth rate of 5.0%. Quite a large portion of Waterloo’s residents are of various Asian backgrounds with Chinese being the predominant group (6.8%). This is followed by Indian (3.8%), and Korean (0.9%).

The major shopping centre in Waterloo is Conestoga Mall which is located at 550 King Street North. The mall is home to over 130 stores and services. Anchor tenants include Hudson’s Bay, Galaxy Cinemas, Winners, and Sport Chek.
