Sarnia City Guide

Located in southwestern Ontario, Sarnia is the largest city on Lake Huron, with a population of 71,125 as of 2016. Sarnia is on the eastern bank of the junction between the Upper and Lower Great Lakes, where Lake Huron flows into the St. Clair River, which forms the Canada-US border.

Sarnia is the border city to Port Huron, Michigan, and the city is home to a natural harbour that has history dating back to French explorers. The city has a large artistic presence in Ontario, and is home to the renowned International Symphony Orchestra.

Demographics

As of the Canada 2016 Census, there are 72,125 people living in the city of Sarnia. This represents a -1.3% decline from the 2011 Census population of 73,044. Sarnia’s growth rate dramatically lags behind Ontario’s of 4.6% and Canada’s growth rate of 5.0%. An overwhelming majority of the population in the city is of white ethnicity, with visible minorities account for the remaining 4.61% of residents. The largest visible minority groups in the city include Chinese, South Asian and Black Canadians.

Retail

There are three major shopping centres in Sarnia: Lambton Mall, Bayside Mall, and London Road Shopping Centre. The largest is Lambton, which has over 100 brand name retailers, and is located at the intersection of London Rd. and Lambton Mall Rd.

There are currently no professional sports team that belong to Sarnia. Most residents in the city visit Toronto for professional sports.

Sarnia Infrastructure

Public Transportation

Sarnia Transit is the main transit system, and operates a fleet of buses which service the entire city. There are currently no plans for any rapid transit system to be implemented in Sarnia. A majority of major routes run from 6:45 a.m. until 12:45 a.m., Monday to Saturday, and 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. A one-way fare on the Sarnia Transit system is $3 for adults, students, youth, and seniors. A monthly pass can be purchased for $73 a month for adults, and students can purchase semester passes for $157.

Airport

The Sarnia Chris Hadfield Airport is classified as an airport entry for Nav Canada and can handle general aviation aircrafts only. This means that there are no more than 30 passengers per flight and no commercial airlines fly into the Sarnia’s Airport. Sarnia residents must visit Toronto Pearson International Airport for their air travel needs.

Taxi

The biggest taxi company that operates in Sarnia is United Taxi. Because taxis are difficult to hail on the go, it is best to book in advance or visit a train station or hotel where they are usually parked waiting for passengers.

An alternative to taking a taxi in Sarnia is Uber. Currently, the only Uber service available is the low-cost UberX. Uber has quickly become the most popular ride hailing service across Canada for its convenience.

Highways

The Ontario 402 Highway, commonly known as the Blue Water Bridge Approach, is the main highway that brings traffic to and from Sarnia. Residents can take the Ontario 402 towards London, and from there connect back onto the Ontario 401 to reach Toronto.

Hospitals

There are two hospitals in the city of Sarnia: Bluewater Health Sarnia and Pathways Health Centre for Children.
