Pickering City Guide

Located in the Durham Region and east of Toronto, Pickering is a city bordered by Ajax and Lake Ontario. While the northern part of the city is mostly rural and used for agricultural purposes, the southern part of the city is mainly suburban, with industrial areas. Schools

The Durham District School Board (DDSB) provides public education for 17 elementary schools and 2 secondary schools. Catholic education in Pickering is provided by the Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB), which oversees 8 Catholic elementary schools and 1 secondary schools. French first language elementary and secondary schools in the city are served by Conseil scolaire Viamonde and the Conseil scolaire de district catholique Centre-Sud.

Private school education is also available through Blaisdale Montessori School, a private school chain with several locations throughout Pickering.

Retail

Pickering is home to Pickering Town Centre, the largest mall in Pickering with over 200 stores.

Parks

There are over 85 parks and 4 conservation areas with over 220 acres of open space, featuring sports fields and trails maintained in Pickering. One of the city’s gems is the 7.6 km stretch of land alongside Lake Ontario. Aside from its waterfront, Pickering also has one of the largest parks in in an urban area in North America, the Rouge National Urban Park.

Sports

There are currently no professional sport teams that belong to Pickering. Residents often commute to the City of Toronto to cheer on teams such as the Raptors and the Blue Jays.

Public Transportation

The main form of transportation in Pickering is serviced by Durham Transit Region (DRT) and GO Transit, with buses operating throughout the city.

Residents are also able to commute to the Greater Toronto Area via the GO train along the Lakeshore East rail line.

Airports

Currently, there is no airport in Pickering. Residents looking to travel internationally will have to visit Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), the closest and largest international airport in the GTA. Handling over 45 million passengers annually, Pearson is the busiest airport in Canada.

Pickering Airport, a proposed second international airport is scheduled to be built and operating by 2027.

Taxi/Uber

The biggest taxi company that operates in Pickering is Durham Rapid Taxi. Because taxis are difficult to hail on the go, it is best to book in advance or visit a train station or hotel where they are usually parked waiting for passengers.

An alternative to hiring a taxi in Pickering is Uber. Currently, Uber offers an expansive selection of options in Pickering including UberX, UberXL, UberSELECT, UberBLACK, and UBERSUV.

Highways

The backbone to Pickering’s road transportation is Highway 401 and runs from Windsor all the way to the Quebec border on the east side of Ontario. Another notable highway is Ontario 407, which runs through the mid-north of the city.
