Peterborough City Guide

Known as the gateway to the Kawarthas or “cottage country”, Peterborough is a city on the Otonabee River in Central Ontario, just 125 km northeast of Toronto. According to the recent 2016 Census, the population of Peterborough is 81,032 and the population of the Census Metropolitan Area, which includes surrounding Townships of Selwyn, Cavan Monaghan, Otonabee-South Monaghan, and Douro-Dummer, was 121,721.

As of the Canada 2016 Census, there are 81,032 people in the city of Peterborough. This represents a 2.9% growth from the 2011 Census population of 78,777. This is comparatively less than both Ontario’s overall growth rate of 4.6% and Canada’s growth rate of 5.0%. A majority of the population in the city is of white ethnicity at 94.2%. The largest visible minority groups in the city include Chinese, South Asian and Black residents.

Retail

There are two major shopping centres in Peterborough: Lansdowne Place and Peterborough Square. Street retail shops are also available in the downtown area of the city.

Sports

There are currently no professional sports teams that call Peterborough home. Most residents in the city visit Toronto to watch professional sports.

Peterborough Infrastructure

Public Transportation

Peterborough Transit is the main transit system, operating a fleet of buses which service the entire city. There are currently no plans for any rapid transit systems to be implemented in the city. A majority of major routes run from 6:00 a.m. until 11:30 p.m., Monday to Saturday, and 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Sunday. A one-way fare on the Peterborough Transit system is $2.50 for adults, children and seniors. A monthly pass can be purchased for $60 a month for adults, $40 a month for children, $55 for students and $40 for seniors.

Airports

The Peterborough Airport is classified as an airport entry for Nav Canada and can only accommodate general aviation aircrafts. This means that there are no more than 15 passengers per flight and no commercial airlines fly into the Peterborough Airport. Residents of Peterborough will need to visit Toronto Pearson International Airport for their air travel needs.

Taxi/Uber

The biggest taxi company that operates in Peterborough is Capitol Taxi. Because taxis are difficult to hail on the go, it is best to book in advance or visit a train station or hotel where they are usually parked waiting for passengers.

Uber is currently not in service in Peterborough and there are no plans to have the service available in the near future.

Highways

The King’s Highway 115 is the provincially-maintained highway that connects Peterborough with Toronto via Highway 401. This, along with Highway 28, are the only two highways that run through the city of Peterborough. The construction of the 407-toll expressway will bring traffic directly from Toronto to Peterborough in 2020.

Hospitals

The only hospital in the city of Peterborough is the Peterborough Regional Health Centre which is located just west of the city and the Otonabee River.
