Brampton City Guide

A suburban city in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Brampton is located in Southern Ontario, just northwest of the City of Toronto. It is currently the ninth-most populous municipality and third-most populous in the Greater Golden Horseshoe region, after Toronto and Mississauga. The city was once known as “The Flower Town” because of its large greenhouse industry. Today, Brampton has a diverse economy with businesses in advanced manufacturing, logistics, IT, food/beverages, and life sciences.

As of the Canada 2016 Census, there are 593,638 people dwelling within the city of Brampton. This represents 13.3% growth from the 2011 Census population of 523,906. There are two major malls in Brampton: Bramalea City Centre and Shoppers World Brampton. Bramalea City Centre is the biggest shopping centre and is home to 360 stores. Bramalea is located just off of Highway 410 on Clark Blvd.


There are currently no professional sports teams that belong to Brampton. Because Brampton is part of the Greater Toronto Area, most residents will cheer on teams from Toronto like the Raptors and Blue Jays.

Public Transportation

Brampton Transit is the main transit system, operating a fleet of buses which service the entire city. Although there are currently no plans for any rapid transit system to be implemented in the city, it neighbours the Toronto rapid transit system, operated by the Toronto Transit Commission. A majority of major routes run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A one-way fare on the Brampton Transit system is $4 for adults and youth and $1 for seniors. A monthly pass can be purchased for $124 a month for adults, $105 for children, and $52 for seniors.


Brampton is serviced by two international airports: Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ).

YYZ is currently the busiest airport in Canada, handling over 45 million passengers annually. Pearson airport is located in Etobicoke, a 30-minute drive from Brampton’s city core, and is the main air traffic hub for the Greater Golden Horseshoe region. Pearson has over 1,100 daily departures to more than 180 destinations around the world.

YTZ is a small international airport that is located on the Toronto Islands just south of Lakeshore Boulevard. Porter Airlines and Air Canada are the two primary airlines that service this small airport, which has daily departures to nearby cities in both Canada and the US.


The biggest taxi company that operates in Brampton is A1 Taxi. Because taxis are difficult to hail on the go, it is best to book in advance or visit a train station or hotel where they are usually parked waiting for passengers.

An alternative to hiring a taxi in Brampton is Uber. Currently, Uber offers an expansive selection of options in Brampton including UberX, UberXL, UberSELECT, POOL, UberBLACK, UberSUV, UberAssist, and UberWAV.


The Ontario 407 is the main highway that brings traffic to and from the Ontario 401, the main highway of southern Ontario. To reach Toronto, many elect to take the Ontario 427 via the Ontario 407.


There are two hospitals in the city of Brampton: Brampton Civic Hospital and Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness.
