Barrie City Guide

Located on the shores of Kempenfelt Bay, Barrie is part of the Simcoe Country but is a politically independent municipality. Barrie is located within the northern part of the Greater Golden Horse, a densely populated region of Ontario that includes cities like Toronto and Hamilton. According to the 2016 census, the city’s population is the 34th largest in Canada and the 21st largest census metropolitan area. There are three major shopping centres in Barrie: Georgian Mall, Kolov Centre, and Park Place. Georgian Mall is the largest shopping destination, with over 150 brand name retailers, and is located just off Highway 400 on Bayfield St.


There are currently no professional sports team that belong to Barrie. Most residents in the city visit Toronto for professional sports.

Barrie Infrastructure

Public Transportation

Barrie Transit is the main transit system, operating a fleet of buses which service the entire city. There are currently no plans for any rapid transit systems to be implemented in the city. A majority of major routes run from 5:00 a.m. until 12:00 a.m., Monday to Saturday, and 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Sunday. A one-way fare on the Barrie Transit system is $3 for adults, students, youth, and seniors. A monthly pass can be purchased for $86 a month for adults, $66 a month for students, and $56 for seniors.


The Lake Simcoe Regional Airport is classified as an airport entry for Nav Canada and can handle general aviation aircrafts only. This means that there are no more than 24 passengers per flight and no commercial airlines fly into Barrie’s Airport. Residents of Barrie must visit Toronto Pearson International Airport for their air travel needs.


The biggest taxi company in Barrie is Barrie Taxi. Because taxis are difficult to hail on the go, it is best to book in advance or visit a train station or hotel where they are usually parked waiting for passengers.

An alternative to taking a taxi in Barrie is Uber. Currently, Uber is offered via Innisfil Transit, with services like UberX, UberXL, UberSELECT, UberBLACK, and UberSUV.


The Ontario 400 Highway is the main highway that brings traffic to and from Barrie. An alternative route to Barrie is highway 27, which runs parallel to Ontario 400 and eventually becomes the Ontario 409, which brings traffic towards Pearson International Airport in Toronto.


The only hospital in the city of Barrie is Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre which is located just south of Little Lake off Highway 400.
