Nanaimo has a rich history that is preserved in several heritage sites and museums. The third oldest city in British Columbia, it was founded as a trading post in the early 19th century. When coal was discovered in the area, the Hudson's Bay Company built coal mines and transformed the town into a key export centre.
Many Chinese labourers were hired to work in the coal mines for low wages and long hours, in unsafe conditions. The 1887 Nanaimo Mine Explosion killed 150 miners, 53 of whom were unnamed Chinese workers.
Nowadays, the coal mining industry has been largely supplanted by forestry and tourism. However, the Morden Mine Historical Site provides a fascinating glimpse into this important part of Nanaimo's history.
