Explore Ajax's Rich Cultural Heritage
Several small settlements and farms existed in the Ajax area in the 19th and early 20th centuries. During the Second World War, a Defence Industries Limited shell plant was constructed to support the Allied war effort, and a town site sprang up around the factory.
The name Ajax was chosen in honour of one of the HMS Ajax, which helped defeat the powerful German battleship Admiral Graf Spree at the Battle of the River Plate in Uruguay in 1939.
After the War, the community's population continued to grow, and it was incorporated as a Town in 1955. Twenty years later, it annexed part of the area of neighbouring Pickering to form its modern boundaries. Today, Ajax is one of the fastest growing municipalities in the Greater Toronto Area.
